Nice to get to sit with Scar and Smooth but let me tell you this, we had some great formations that were right out of the back yard play list...very entertaining and some boys were laying wood out there too

Oh I was wondering what Medic thought of his boy today.. Greiser is really something.. When you watch the stats board his name is always in the picture. Love that player.. What an asset he is, but boy is he hard on the other team....

I was expecting you to drop by, auntie. Your nephew played a whale of a ballgame today. I'll bet he has a shot at Big South Offensive Player of the Week. He picked a great day to throw the ball so well.

I want hear more firsthand accounts of the atmosphere and the action on the field from those fortunate enough to be at the game.

I think one of the things I'm most excited about is the future. CCU & CSU both were primed for huge years behind the bigtime senior QBs in Thigpen & Drafts. Next year they are both going to have holes to fill at key positions while our young guys will be the experienced and dangerous ones in the Big South.

I think we clearly exposed CSU today. With their creampuff schedule we had no idea how good they really were. They could've been great especially considering how well they handled G-W last Saturday. But facing a quality opponent on the road proved they still have a ways to go in the program before they are truly playoff contenders. Frankly based on how our schedule is setting up next year, I'm seriously juiced about 2007.

In the meantime, we now have an opportunity at a winning record in our season finale next Saturday in Lexington. But winning on the road has been tough for us in recent years. But I believe this game will give us the confidence we need to close out the Keydets.

Hey Sly, you know he was sure they were going to win Today. All week he assured me that this was the a game for the Flames.. I am so proud of him Today, he is really starting to seem like the player he can be... It sounded like such fun at the game today, the excitement was really captivating. I am so sad that this season is almost over, I kind of think the guys are ready to come on strong.. On another note I think you guys on this board should be congragulated for really creating such excitement and fellowship, it has a great deal to do with all the things going on with the Flames, I think it all adds up for the changes we are seeing. I cant wait for next year, I think some good things can happen...

Yeah Ryan really is proving to be a hard hitter for a guy we thought was going to be a tailback for us. I'm sure medic is celebrating even in his heavily medicated state.

As far as our role in the excitement around the program, I'd love for the board to take credit. But it really goes to Coach Rocco, his staff and the players who have given the student body & alumni something to get excited about. Of course we're doing our best to play a small role in keeping people enthused about the team.

I have to say that you guys always give me a place to have a voice, and read and enjoy, and share sorrow.. It has been fun for me, I come to this site everyday, and admit It can get addictive. I enjoy it.. I was just on Mapquest seeing how far VMI is from home, trying to get a last game trip in the mix. I will be lost on Saturday's without my Flames Fix, I count on you guys to get me geared up for next year early.. Thanks again for a fun season...

VMI has a nice little stadium on a beautiful campus. I wish I were making the trip. The Keydets game atmosphere is great with the toy soldiers (hey, I can start stirring the pot now that the CSU game is over) in full uniforms. I admit I enjoy playing them as much as anyone on our schedule. We are slowly building a nice little rivalry with them and a victory next Saturday in Lexington would really pick up things.

This has been our first year to monitor FlameFans and I agree with Auntie Ann - this place can be addictive. I spend too much time on here. I too have enjoyed all of you guys. Even though I don't post very often, I enjoy keeping up with your notes and insights into LU football. Thanks to Sly and the others who keep the spirit and attitude of this site positive. You guys have been a good witness this year to all the guests who have come on from the other teams.

Congrats to the team on a successful season. I look forward to next year and the exictement that is coming.

Guess I'll need to go for now and cheer on the Gator's.

Thanks for kind words, flafan. But I have to tell you as a Horn backer I'd love to see the Gators lose. :)

Now how about some defensive numbers:

Image

You think Manny was taking Senior Day seriously? He had a monster game focused on Drafts. And that's no easy task. Stevie Ray had another great game. But the big stories were Brandon Duke & Ryan Grieser playing bigtime in a bigtime ballgame. Congrats to the entire Falemsdefense who really were the biggest reason we won today even with the offense clicking so well. CSU brought a high-powered offensive attack into Lynchburg and they are slinking home to Chucktown wondering what just hit them.

Here is the recap from CSU SIDs:
11/11/2006
Buccaneers Upset at Liberty 34-20; Streak Ends at 14 Games

By CSU Sports Information

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Liberty Flames (5-5, 1-2) took the momentum early with two, 80-yard drives and held off Charleston Southern (9-1, 2-1) for a 34-20 victory on Senior day at Williams Stadium. The loss ended three winning streaks for CSU, who held the Nation’s second-longest winning streak at 14 games.

Liberty gained 179 total offensive yards in the first quarter, to CSU’s 48. Quarterbacks Smith and Terrell combined to go 6-6 through the air for 135 yards for the Flames, while Drafts started the game just 3-6, gaining 38 yards. Drafts would go on to complete 12 of his next 14 passes before giving way to Eli Byrd who ended the day 8-13 with one interception. Drafts threw for 116 yards, while Byrd added 71 in his first appearance at quarterback of his career. Junior wide receiver Maurice Price hauled in a record-tying 13 passes for 61 yards. Defensively for CSU, C.J. Hirschman led the way with 12 tackles, including one tackle-for-loss. Linebacker Jonna Lee added 11 stops for the Buccaneers. Manny Rojas had 11 stops for the Flames, picking off one pass and recording one tackle-for-loss.

The Flames would amass 354 total yards on the day, while CSU managed 265, despite running more offensive plays, holding a 60-56 edge in that category. The Buccaneers also had three turnovers, while Liberty did not turn the ball over at all.

“We certainly didn’t protect the ball very well,” said Mills. “But we didn’t give them the ball, they did a good job of taking it away.”

A team known for a stifling defense, the Flames’ offense wasted no time putting points on the board as they used just six plays to go 80 yards. After a successful run to start the game, a couple of long passes put Liberty on the CSU side of the field. From there, first-year head coach Danny Rocco decided to strike early, calling a rare trick play throwing a backwards pass from one quarterback to another as Brock Smith tossed it to Zach Terrell, who threw it back across the field to Smith who had blockers setting him up for a 27-yard gain down to the CSU 12 yard line. An 8-yard run by Terrell would cap the drive and put Liberty up 6-0 with 11:45 to go in the first quarter, after Zac Kolegue missed the extra point.

The Buccaneer offense looked like it would answer right back, starting the offensive drive with a 27-yard strike from Collin Drafts to Markus Murray across the middle. The drive would stall at midfield, though, as CSU would be forced to punt the ball back to the Flames.

“They were a very physical team, on both sides of the ball,” said CSU head coach Jay Mills. “We knew that it was something that Coach (Danny) Rocco emphasized, but they controlled us on the line of scrimmage.”

The result would be a 56-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Turner, putting Liberty up 13-0 just 8:12 into the game. The touchdown marked the first time in 2006 that the Buccaneers have trailed by more than 10 points. CSU trailed Wingate 10-0 in the third quarter on Sept. 16 of this season.

The Buccaneer defense would get their first stop, as they forced a 44-yard field goal attempt that hooked wide left.

A Nick Ellis punt would pin the Flames back inside the 10 and after a stop by the defense, C.J. Hirschman would go back deep to return the punt. Hirschman found a hole up the middle taking it 63-yards for the first Charleston Southern score of the day, cutting the lead to 13-7.

Liberty had an answer, though, as Wynton Jackson took the ensuing kickoff back 80-yards for a special teams touchdown of their own, increasing the lead back to 13. a fumble by Drafts would give the ball back to Liberty, and the Flames would take advantage, going 57 yards in seven plays to increase their lead to 27-7 with just over two minutes remaining in the first half.

“The kick return was a killer,” said wide receiver Maurice Price, who tied the single-game receptions record for CSU with 13 catches. “We really thought the punt return by C.J. (Hirschman) would give us some momentum on both sides of the ball, but that really knocked the air out of us.”

Senior linebacker Manny Rojas picked off a Drafts pass just before halftime, setting up another Flames scoring opportunity, but consecutive sacks by the Buccaneers pushed Liberty out of field goal range and keeping the CSU deficit at 27-7 going into halftime.

The second half would be more of the same as the first CSU drive stalled near midfield, resulting in the fourth CSU punt. After allowing a short Liberty drive, a Josh Warrior sack made it fourth down and 12, causing the Flames to punt back to CSU. The offense would be faced with a daunting task, needing to go 92 yards against a Flame defense that had shut them out for 38 minutes and counting. Backed up third-and-long, Drafts completed a 13-yard pass to Murry to keep the drive alive, and repeated the feat to Rucks. The next play, Drafts would catch the whole stadium’s attention as he scrambled from the pocket and went down on the play, giving way to freshman quarterback Eli Byrd. Byrd’s second play of the game was an interception deep in Liberty territory. That would be the end of the third quarter, as neither team could put a scoring drive together, leaving CSU facing a 20-point deficit with just 15 minutes to play and the ball in the hands of the redshirt freshman Byrd to mount a comeback.

It was not to be as the Bucs gave the ball back to Liberty, and the Flames would go 80-yards with a 45-yard touchdown strike from Smith to Jackson to put the dagger in the Buccaneers.

A 31-yard touchdown pass to Bryant Burch on fourth-and-22 cut the lead to 34-13 and avoided the offensive shut out, giving Byrd his first touchdown pass of his career. He would follow that up with a one-yard touchdown run with under a minute to go to cut the lead to 34-20, but the Bucs would run out of time as the winning streak ends at 14 games.

“We have no choice but to refocus for the Coastal Carolina game now,” said senior quarterback Collin Drafts. “As a senior, and a leader of this team, I have to make sure everyone knows that our season is not over.”

Charleston Southern will face the Nationally-ranked Chanticleers at Conway, S.C. next week, in a game that still has major Conference and National implications.

Post Game Notes

*** The Flames had only scored more than 30 points one time, as they beat Glenville State 31-7 in the second game of the season.

*** The loss ended three winning streaks: Overall at 14 games, season at nine, and Conference at five.

*** Collin Drafts was held without a touchdown pass for the first time in 19 games, dating back to the shut out loss to Presbyterian on Sept. 10 of last year.

*** Maurice Price caught 13 passes, tying the school record for receptions in a game. He tied his own record, set last year against Liberty on Nov. 12, and with the late Eddie Gadson, who caught 13 against Presbyterian on Sept. 11, 2004.

And a note for next week: Rashad now needs just 91 yards to record the Big South's fifth ever 1000-yard season.

This is the first win over a ranked team in 9 years.

Manny taking CSU's QBs head off was amazing. The kid's helmet went flying off.

I don't know what Jerry said on the radio, but Dickerson flat out body slammed the guy on the botched XP.

Brock Smith was amazing today. That kid played flat out friggin awesome. I loved the trick play in the first quarter.

When we lined Brock up at WR and Zach at QB the CSU coaches were freaking out.

Rashad's just not healthy. Zach's playing amazing though so it doesn't hurt.

Jason Horn being back was huge.

My "prank" went off without a hitch today. Drafts' girlfriend even signed the poster and I got a picture with her.

For the record, I was the first student on the field. I doubt that surprises anyone.

SJ ... right you are about Rashad. I was pretty worried when I heard "high ankle sprain" that Rashad wouldn't be right the rest of the year. When Michael Vick had a high ankle sprain at Tech, I think it was in late October his sophomore year, he wasn't 100 percent until the bowl game against Clemson in January. It's a tough injury.

I have to admit, the fans for this game was the absolute best I've ever seen. It was loud.

Rushing the field as fantastic and def. an atmosphere LU hasn't seen in awhile.

Brock played the game of his life.

The WRs also played extremely well.

Colin Draft's girlfriend is hot.

Our LB trio of Rojas, Lloyd and Duke is downright one of the nastiest, hard hitting core I've ever seen in my life. Kenny the Clipboard (CSU's backup QB) got wasted by Rojas. JACKED UP!

Great win for the Flames. The "OVERRATED!" chant really fit here. CSU just got manhandled.

No, I never really said much about it. I printed off a picture of Collin Drafts' girlfriend and put it on the posterboard that said, "Hey Collin She's Hot!" Their players saw it and their eyes got huge and their jaws drop.

During halftime she came over to where we were sitting (I was actually in another section at the time) and said something like, "I heard you guys had a sign about me." She saw it and autographed it. They called me and said she was over there and I ran over and gave her a huge hug and said it was awesome that she signed it, then I got a picture with her and the poster.
