Ready?

Go.

Good: 1) Defense 2) QB controversy is over, for what it's worth 3) Absolutely nothing!

Bad: 1) Injuries to key players. 2) Offense all around (o line, kicking, pass protection, penalties, etc, etc, etc, etc.) 3) This game foreshadows a very long game next Saturday and most likely a very long year.

Both teams were trying to lose so hard that SMU finally gave up at it.

The Good:

1. Buckshot's growth from the first series to finishing the game and almost helping us get the "W".
2. Frankie Hickson has some serious skill.
3. Defense continues to play well, not perfect but the overall team speed is still so refreshing and exciting. Great job to Gill and coaching staff on recruiting these guys.

The Bad:

1. The officiating was inconsistent at best on both sides. Missed blocks in the back, that kick catch interference call was a load of CRAP! As well as the illegal man down field. Never the less we had some blatant holding calls that they missed to.
2. Masha, I am thankful for his leadership and up beat attitude, but he played bad tonight.
3. The play calling at times was atrocious.

Extra bad:
1. The negativity on the board tonight. We yet again competed and seriously almost won the game tonight against another FBS school. IF JSU beats us worse than SMU I will be shocked! We are 1-2 and I for one am encouraged about this season with where it can and I believe will go. Playoff bound come november boys.

Good

Calvert
Once he got in the game and got in a rhythm, he looked good. I still don't know that he's 100% ready, but he's our best option at this point.

Defense
Our offense put the defense in bad spots and we held them to field goals more often than not.

We were still in it
We played horrible for much of the game and we still had a win within reach in the fourth quarter.

The Bad

Masha
I hate to say that because everything I hear about the kid is great. I want him to be successful. He just didn't play well and unfortunately for him I think he lost his job tonight.

The Penalties
We had two penalties call back touchdowns. We can't do that and be successful later this year.

The Opponent
I know they're FBS, but SMU is not a good team. They are likely the 4th or 5th best team we'll play this year.

Good:

1. Frankie Hickson and Carrington Mosley
For Hickson, he has the potential to be a very VERY special back for us after 4 years...and he probably ought to be our primary kick returner as well as he nearly took one to the house tonight

For Mosley...where the heck has this been??? He underachieved the last two years after redshirting and now he is playing like he wanted to be the game 1 starter this year.

2. Steven Calvert
This young man has the potential to make a big mark for us as well. He has made his share of freshman mistakes yes, but he has shown that he definitely has what it takes to be "the man" for us. Does this mean we have a controversy? Absolutely not...as I have said before, the only QB controversy has been the one created on this board. If HCTG decides to give him the start against Jacksonville State, I will wonder his motivation behind the decision, but I will 100% support it. If he decides to go with Masha, I will wonder what his motivation behind THAT decision, but again, I will 100% support it.

3. The defense.
Yes I did express my disappointment in the defense tonight on the game thread, but they kept us right in it until the end. Flip the script on a couple plays here and there and you may be looking at a different result tonight.

Bad

1. Line play.
We allowed 3 sacks. 28 negative yards rushing and a blocked kick at a critical juncture in the 4th quarter...not acceptable

2. Stephon Masha
After looking like a seasoned veteran in the win over Jacksonville last week, Masha regressed this week. As a veteran, he should be able to turn his game up on the bigger stages, especially in an offense tailored to his skill set.

3. The board
I didn't think I would ever list the board as a bad in the aftermath of a game, but while Im not naive enough to think that a) the team reads this board and b) even if they did, that comments on here would (or should) affect how they play, I really am disappointed in the attitude of some on here. There is somewhat of a fine line (I think) to being a realist with high expectations and being what some would call a "negative Nancy" or a "Debbie downer". Im not saying that we need to be all sunshine and gumdrops and unicorns and fluffy clouds about this bunch, but I also would not set them up for failure in my mind either. When I ran down my picks for this season right after the schedule came out, I had this team I believe at 8-3. They are right about where I expected them to be through 3 games. Am I disappointed in how the game turned out? Absolutely I am...but that doesn't mean Im trashing this bunch for doing essentially what I thought they would do.

Im opening in a few hours but I will try to get the JSU thread up in the afternoon. Good night and onto the next one

The Good

1) S. Calvert – The more reps he gets with the 1’s, the better the odds that the team can run the table during Big South play, and Gill doesn’t get fired.
2) The Kicking and punt return game – Over all pretty good.
3) Defense – They were swarming around, but I wish someone could teach these guys (i.e. the secondary) how to wrap up and tackle. Too many times the offensive player was dead in their sights, and the defender(s) would blow a sure tackle, because they just reached for the jersey or hit the player with only their shoulders… I have a great idea, how about using both your arms and shoulders to bring the offensive player down.

The Bad

1) Masha – Stares the offensive player down from the moment the ball is snapped = 3 interceptions
2) Masha – not accurate
3) Masha – Start making the transition to WR, RB, or safety, because it’s a wrap for you at QB.

The Good

Buckshot... that Buckshot to Golden-Gandy connection will be magic for us in the next 4 years. I'm calling them The Bullet Club.
Image

Defensive Line... They got a ton of pressure on Hicks, but when he got the ball away, nobody seemed to want to tackle.

Kick/Punt Return... We're going to break one off soon.

The Bad

Tackling.

Turnovers.

Losing when we know we should have won.

The TV announcers mentioned his staring down the offensive player... both BEFORE and AFTER the play. As if Masha was saying, "This is your fault."

Multiple people have mentioned tackling. One of the announcers said that we don't hit or tackle at all during practice, that we've adopted the Seahawks philosophy on that. Could explain a lot if true.

Look for postseason interviews with Moglia 2 (or 3?) years ago. He does this and was very vocal about it. Back when people were speculating he was fishing for a better job.

It's not the Seahawks we are following.

You say there is no QB controversy and then go on to describe a QB controversy.
YOU are part of the board. Are you disappointed in yourself?

Masha's a great athlete, a team player and needs to play, but I think we are about to see something special over the next three years. I like the way the coaching staff has handled the QB position so far. Letting Buckshot see and touch some FBS competition. I think it's time to turn him lose against the FCS this week, but I wouldn't be to disappointed if they waited for conference play.

1) I don't see it as a controversy really. I see it as a coaching decision. HCTG figured he could win with Masha as the man going back to spring ball...and now he has to re-evaluate and decide if he wants to stick with the junior going forward or give the keys to the Maserati to Calvert. Like I said, the only controversy is the one basically created by this board which leads to...

GOOD
1. Calvert showing some serious growth
2. Defensive line
3. We are actually returning kicks!!!

BAD
1. Tackling was awful
2. Masha
3. BJ Williams continually playing ultimate message board judge. When will you stop BJ?? This is a message board. We discus our opinions. Sometimes we are happy, sometimes we aren't. Such is life. Get over it man and enjoy life.
