I've decided I'm going to put this on the players Woodrum connects on one or two of those passes that would have gone for a TD we aren't saying a word. Lunsford hits those FG's we are in a different ball game. If the staff was asking them to do things they weren't capable of than sure. But that wasn't the case. The lack of execution was what killed us.
The only thing I might blame the staff for is the OL

Part of it is execution and on the players. The fumbles are inexcusable. Badly missing open receivers is inexcusable. Badly missed field goals are inexcusable. Not filling gaps is also inexcusable.

Part of it is also boneheaded coaching. Offensive play calling is very inconsistent. Last week it was very good (not perfect); this week it was horrible. The defense was completely outclassed, as has been par for the course against legitimate power teams (save 2012 against Stony Brook).

From the very first snap, the team was clearly not prepared to play today. That is on the coaches, starting at the top.

Id disagree. The right call would have been to honor the contract and play the regularly scheduled game this year and not go running after the money because you took a financial hit trying to outbid the team you ended up losing to anyway.

They made about 500K and beat an FBS team. They made the right call.

Just try and erase this and move on. Our D looking pretty awful. They kept moving at will. Our QB & WRs look like they are in the first week of practice. The running game, I don't know what to say about the running game.

Nope. Today sucked on many levels. But I would rather deal with this debacle than another beatdown of Bryant or Robert Morris which tells us nothing about the overall state of the program.

Absolutely horrible, I can't believe the lack of effort and constant mistakes made on both sides of the ball today. I look at it this way though, we could be either UCF or South Carolina and be a program that's combusting faster than a Ford Pinto.

My thoughts on the game:

The defense didn't seem to be prepared for all the wrinkles in SIUs offense. SIU had some creative play calling going for them.

Our offense could pick up the tempo a bit sometimes. When we have momentum it seems like we kill it by operating so deliberately, and when we're down 21 and almost into the 4th quarter it's even more frustrating.

Woodrum, Rice, and the offensive line all are good but not great, and the receivers show potential but too many drops. We don't have a strength/identity we can count on pulling us through in games like this.

It seemed like the coaching staff and players were less bothered being down 21 than I was watching. I know this isn't the case, as the players and coaches spend so much time and effort on practice, game planning, etc. but it's obvious we were much more hyped for Montana.

More than likely Coastal became our first playoff game this season and I find that annoying.

The biggest difference I saw last night was in team speed and quickness. Speed kills. Their O & D had a step on us all night. Also last year Woodrum broke off some nice runs, he's not doing that this year. Without the threat it gets a lot easier for opposing defences. That's why I ask if he's hurt. He's wearing a lot of extra padding around the midsection.

No one did anything right tonight. We are slow. They were twice as fast as us. What's up with all the padding Woodrums wearing, is he hurt, it looks like he can barely move in it.

When your OL sucks as bad as ours you've got to do something to protect yourself...

Woodrum should have spent more time in the off season working on his accuracy and less in the weight room and at the training table. The extra weight he put on has slowed him down, and he still misses too many open receivers. Even with Petey out, our receiving corps created plenty of opportunities for big plays. I said Woodrum didn´t look good against Delaware St. and got ripped for it because we won, but Southern Illinois wasn´t Delaware St. and it cost us. Add to that the 2 fumbles which handed them a touchdown and destroyed any chance we had for a comeback (we were in scoring territory with plenty of timeremaining) and IMHO he bears the lion´s share of the blame for this one.

Our defense didn´t suddenly get slow. Their OL was simply more physical than our DL, and we missed some tackles we were making against WVU and Montana. The short passes they were completing are quick release timing patterns that are really hard to stop, but we didn´t tackle well enough after the catch. Even so, it was the run that beat us.

That probably helped them recover the hundreds of thousands of dollars they lost by getting beat at home by us in the playoffs last year.

Its not always that simple. at the time JMU did whatever they did to this game (postponed, bought out, etc.) there probably were not a ton of teams (from any FCS conference) we could have called and set up a game in Lynchburg without creating a domino effect of some sort. SIU happened to have that weekend open and so the game was made. I think its safe to say that just about everybody here probably would have preferred having a home game in that spot.

Last year the issues were with WR drops. That means the WR had an accurate throw to catch. Now they are not getting accurate throws

Its not always that simple. at the time JMU did whatever they did to this game (postponed, bought out, etc.) there probably were not a ton of teams (from any FCS conference) we could have called and set up a game in Lynchburg without creating a domino effect of some sort. Here is an example of a possible progression that I am referring to:

Say, in the offseason, we hear from JMU about the game on the 26th (as was what happened). JB goes through his list and calls the AD at Sacred Heart (who played Dartmouth yesterday). He calls him up and offers to give them say..$400,000 to come to Lynchburg and play us. They have Dartmouth on the schedule, so the Sacred Heart AD then goes to the Dartmouth AD and asks to buy out that game. If they agree to it, then let's say the Dartmouth AD goes to say...Bucknell's AD and wants to schedule a game. Bison had that scheduled as their bye week so the Bucknell AD calls the VMI AD and buys out that game (or some sort of arrangement) and on and on it goes.

Woodrum threw some very accurate long passes against Montana. I thought he might have finally made a big step in the right direction in this area. Obviously, he hasn't. I am not a Woodrum hater, you can have a bad game every now and then. I do have questions about his health as well. He is not running the ball near as much as the last couple of years.

When he's on he's incredible. The problem is we've only had one quarter of him being on all year.
