They look like the bastard children of one of the Super Mario Brothers and Wendy of hamburger fame. Which is really bad because BURGER KING has their food FLAME broiled!

One day away from the game, and all I can think of is how I will respond to the first #flamethrower that kills the vibe or gets in the way.I totally agree Jon, if this group wanted to hang around the cheerleaders, they would still look RiDiculous, but maybe serve a purpose. The problem is, we have paid someone to come up with ideas like this, and we are paying the students to dress like that. So even if it flops really hard, and people hate it as much as we think they will, they will be around all year. Montana, and Coastal at home, thankfully JMU cancelled their trip. We dont have to embarrass our fan base in front of anymore top tier teams.

:flamethrower <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

P.S. I have reserved the word RiDiculous for those things I really hate. It was my original username on flamefans, before the transistion to this new site, and it got lost in translation. When reading the post, put a little Jim Rome into the word, emphasis on the D.. RiDiculous.

As stated previously this is a great idea - as was LUnatics etc. However, the student body needs to be able to relate with these types of groups. This group will not relate with the students, therefore, it will have a difficult time being effective. I'm not saying it can't, but it will have a tough time. Students need to see other students that look like them/dress like them who lose their minds at games... Having that same person in red/blue overalls and crazy hair causes a disconnect, which can lead to embarrassment, which ultimately leads to despise/being ostracized from their peers. I hope we keep pushing these types of groups to get everyone engaged and involved, especially with our chants/fight song/new traditions, but it needs to be unifying and relatable.

A group like that needs to be organic. though the "Baptist side" didn't care for it, that's what made the LUnatics so good. Students started it, and students maintained it. it wasn't a forced or contrived group either, unlike this "flamethrowers" group. If there had been a more solid nucleus maintained in the year or two after Jon, JDUB, FFG, BrysOnG, myself and Leo weren't around, we'd be talking about their latest antics ahead of the DSU game

I don't understand. I've been to Lane Stadium 6 times. I saw some crazy kids and outfits, but none that were set up and promoted by the school. And none that looked this ridiculous. If these kids tried to get into Lane Stadium wearing the same costumes in Hokie colors they'd get singled out for breathalizers.

And why do we need cheers? Why can't we just keep it simple by doing the following:
1) Wear LU colors
2) Stand up and yell (OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!) when the defense is on the field
3) Sit down and shut up while the offense is on the field
4) Stay for all 4 quarters

I think ballcoach got ahold of HO´s login info.

Since I was the one who brought it up, I think I should say that it does not look like this was Tim East´s idea, since they were looking for kids to do it before he was hired. He didn´t do anything to stop it though. At least not for now.

Those of you saying this is for the student side are missing the point of this group. These kids will be scattered out throughout the Baptist side to help that side engage in the game through chants and cheers. That's what makes their name and costumes that much more ridiculous.

Ouch.

I'm not an old fogey by any stretch of the imagination. I don't mind people doing cheers... I just think at some point people take it too far and it becomes a sideshow and distracts the crowd from being engaged in the game. During timeouts/halftime I could really care less. I for one LOVE the loud music and pizazz during the breaks. I just want people to focus on being the 12th man when it matters to try and help the team win.

I didn't realize that was the agenda for the group... It will be even that much more challenging to get this off the ground and stay positive.
I remember the glitter painted (or however you want to say it) students with their horns and running through the concourse... it was embarrassing. My wife turned to me and asked what was going on as we missed two plays on the field. Not a good look and distracting. Even the players on the sideline were looking up trying to figure out what the heck was happening. The best thing for the Baptist Side is for recent grads to get season tickets ($35 per seat - if I'm not mistaken) and just be normal football fans. People like giving examples of VT, and that's because that is a normal football fan base that understands the game. To HO's point, they know what to do when the defense is on the field and when the offense is on the field. They do not follow anyone else but the cheerleaders, which is why they are called "Cheer" "Leader" (obviously there is a longer history of traditions that are known and understood there, but the point is the same). Adding a student group filtered throughout the crowd will only be distracting from the field and obnoxious i.e. glitter people.

Exactly. It does not take a group of overalls and crazy hair to do that.

They should all wear a suit and tie like Dr Falwell. Maybe even go for a whole Dr Falwell look and lead cheers from the Baptist side. That would work better IMO

If I see one of those clowns around me on the Baptist side, I hope they can dodge cupcakes at 80mph. I am all for cheering loud, staying for 4 quarters and wearing red, but this is waaaaaay too cheesy. I suspect they will be ignored on the Baptist side.

If I'm wrong and this group is actually for the student side, then that's even worse. Our students know the chants and cheers. They've got the Jokers and whatever other student group starts up this year. They don't need Flame Throwers.

Yeah they're not as raucous, but the home side is getting better. This is more a step in the wrong direction than anything

The majority of them will be on the Baptist side, according to the "Director of the Fans Experience and promotions" twitter feed.

Oh goody

I hope they stay away from the upper deck. I'd hate to see one of them get tossed over the edge for standing up during a game. The people on the Baptist side are there for a reason: we don't stand, jump, or dance, and the only reason we leave our seats is to go to the bathroom.

Speak for yourself. We have fun on my end of the baptist side, lol.

Speaking of "upper deckers", excuse me while I go leave one.

This "Director of Fan Experience and Promotions" did not do their homework it sounds like.

If Im in a position like that, I'm at the games, checking out both sides and taking lots of notes, and in the offseason, surveying the fans and finding out what THEY want to improve the gameday experience.

BTW I think I saw a pic somewhere with the red jacket guy blowing fire?!? Now that is pretty cool I will admit.

They stayed down on the field for the most part. Where the cheerleaders would normally be. They would hold up signs and get the crowd involved. The execution was much better than I anticipated. Still not crazy about the costumes, but not nearly as terrible as expected. "My B" to the director of fan experience.
