Chris Lang wrote:Well, I remember that time I drove all the way to Norfolk, leaving at 6 a.m. on a Saturday, to cover the Liberty-ODU basketball game ... and I got there to find out Jerry Jr. had decided that the basketball program -- or anyone in athletics, really -- wasn't allowed to talk to me because of a petty squabble over a reader comment from someone not affiliated with the News & Advance on a story that we had published in the local section. That was my first indication of what kind of thin-skinned, Mickey Mouse operation that LU could be. Of course, my response was to continue to ask questions and make McKay feel uncomfortable up there, because I was ticked off. That was the only time I ever cursed at anyone in authority in the athletics department, because when Jeff told me about it, I told him it was #!@& cowplop. He didn't really disagree, either. I sympathize with Jon and Duke. There are really, really good people that work in the athletics department who want nothing to run a professional program and organization. But as can be the case, someone way up the food chain can make a stupid decision and make everyone look bad. That LU is threatened by this site says something about what kind of influence it has inside the LU bubble. Best of luck, gents.
I have always loved Chris Lang. But THIS unfiltered Chris Lang is my favorite. :flamingdevil

I know you probably ask this in jest because I haven't changed that sig in a long time. but yes. RJ hunter (now a boston Celtic) did the unthinkable. and his dad the head coach fell out of his chair after already injuring his leg. it was quite hilarious.

Fellas, it has been a while since I have posted and I know this new name situation has garnered a lot of heat, sarcasm and creativity. Which, by the way is one of the best things about this site that Jon and Duke have provided for us.

I only had one thought for a new name:

fireITupNATION.com

Now, let us remember. . .

9 Saturdays till college football kicks-off!!!

Many of these posts claim this is about LU being thin skinned or needing to avoid criticism. There is a clearer explanation. If trademark holders allow anyone to use their trademarks without permission, they risk not being able to protect their trademark against everyone. Liberty has offered a license if FlamesNation adds the capability to post comments through Facebook accounts. Fan sites at major schools deal with this (TideFans.com (Alabama); DawgNation.com (Georgia) ; PackInsider.com (NC State); NittanyLionsDen.com (Penn State); PittsburgSportsNow.com (Pitt); HerLoyalSons.com (Notre Dame); insideTheHall.com (Indiana)). So why can’t FlamesNation? Especially since Liberty would cover the costs involved for the upgrade.

It wouldn't be an issue if Jr and the administration could take criticism. You really think professors, employees, staff, students, etc. are safe if they post anything they disagree with using their real name? history and their current behavior tells you no.

Seriously though, let's play out this hypothetical. Let's say Jon and Duke signed a licensing deal. And then say a poster makes a post stating that a high level official was arrested and spent a night in jail. And say the poster alleged that the offense was something serious like a DUI or domestic violence or assault. What would Liberty's response to that be? They shut down Yik Yak on campus when people began talking about what they didn't want being exposed. Would they then shut this site down? Go after the poster and/or owner with lawsuit threats?

Liberty has a long history of trying to shut down anyone or anything speaking negatively about the University, even if the content is true. Why would anyone trust they wouldn't do the same thing here?

Again this kind of thing makes it very hard for me to support liberty university. Not that they care.

Did Liberty just get called and compared to a Major school like Alabama?
Do the Universities above run those sites or are they run by people not associated with the school? Do they exercise any editorial control over those sites?
This is about content control, not protecting their brand

Here's one that may be a bit too esoteric, but it retains the basic meaning of the current name and has the added bonus or rhyming

ConflagrationNation

I like it too, or maybe SeaOfRed, which I believe is actually the term we have used to describe our student section
