Ok, I've had a ton of people complaining to me about this so I thought I would throw it out on here. We all know the athletic department reads this message board so this could be as good as an e-mail.
For those that don't know, the Student Flames Club recruited a ton of kids this summer by telling them things that really didn't happen (a bus trip to Wake Forest, a good way to meet people, etc). There are around 550 members or so but maybe 50-75 are truly active at games and such.
The SFC ropes off about 10 rows at games for the members of the club. Part of the benefits of joining the group were that they got priority seating. I think this is a great thing.
For a student "pep club" (even though it's nothing of the sort), members should be there before kickoff. If not, they shouldn't have their seats reserved. I mentioned this to one of the leaders this morning and he even agreed with me. Once the game started there were 7 rows that were empty between the SFC and the rest of the students. We wanted everyone else to fill in because it would look better and it would sound better. We (SFC members) all wanted this.
Once those people moved down, the ROTC and LUPD threatened to kick those students who moved out of the game because someone at the head of the SFC wouldn't okay the students moving down. The thing is, once those students moved into the section, someone took the seats they had originally so when they were told to move, they had nowhere to go but the top of the bleachers.
Do we really want to treat the passionate fans that will get to the game an hour early by sending them to the top of the bleachers? That's a joke. About 75% of the SFC was going to leave with our fellow students if they got kicked out of the game. I'm sure Jerry would've loved seeing that.
It's one thing to reserve seats before the game for a "pep club" but once the game kicks off those seats should be open to anyone who wants tem. A "pep club" should have enough pride in their team that they get to the game before it starts.
I'm sure TDDance will have more to say about this later because he's one of the people that got there over an hour early (hour and 15 minutes in his case) that almost got kicked out. This is ridiculous. The students are actually excited and they are nearly ejected from the game for trying to sit near the field. That's just dumb.
