to be fair, ROKAMORTIS doesn't have the same issues w/ this, so its not ALL of those guys.

somehow I missed this story- now that the dust has settled, I re-read it and noticed a very important paragraph at the bottom which we really didn't hash out that much.

In short- to everyone upset that Presby coming over doesn't help the BSOUTH FB playoff bid situation: what would you think if GW jumped in as well? Gotta get feedback from our friends over at CCU as well on this one.

Presbyterian new addition to Big South
By Chris Lang
Lynchburg News & Advance
April 7, 2006

That sure didn't take long.
A day after the Presbyterian College board of trustees approved a move from Division II to Division I, the Big South extended an invitation to the Clinton, S.C., school.

Presbyterian heartily accepted. Asked how quickly Presbyterian would have Big South banners on campus, PC president John Griffith said, "there's one hanging from the room we're telecasting from."

"I'm going to plaster this campus with the Big South brand as quickly as they'll let me do it," Big South commissioner Kyle Kallander said.

Clearly, this was not an overnight decision.

Kallander played coy during the recruiting process, which started as soon as grumblings emerged that Presbyterian was interested in a classification jump.

School officials contacted the Big South to discuss the feasibility of moving into the league. Big South officials eagerly listened.

Kallander would only say publicly that there had been some interest from both sides. The expedience of the invitation showed just how far those talks had come.

"This is something we hoped would happen," Griffith said. "We revealed all of our plans and all of our aspirations and invited the conference to critique the documents along the way.

"I think it would be unfair to assume this was a decision that was made in two hours."

Presbyterian becomes the conference's 10th member and the sixth football member. PC's inclusion doesn't solve the Big South's Division I-AA playoff problem, however.

Only conferences with six members can be considered for a I-AA playoff automatic bid. Presbyterian, though, won't be eligible for NCAA Division I championships until 2011 and wouldn't be eligible for a football playoff berth until 2015.

Football was a driving force behind the move, but not the decisive one. Presbyterian gives the conference four schools in South Carolina, so it's a natural geographic fit.

"Football is important to us," Kallander said. "Clearly, Presbyterian brought the sixth football member to the table. That was important. But even if they didn't have football, I'm confident that Presbyterian would be welcomed into the conference because of everything else they bring."

Presbyterian will be slowly phased into the conference while it transitions to Division I. PC already has been penciled into future schedules for the league's football teams. Presbyterian will begin playing a full Big South schedule in other sports in 2008-09, but won't be eligible for conference tournaments or championships until 2011-12.

High Point, Elon and Birmingham-Southern went through similar assimilations when they moved from Division II to join the Big South.

"We were fortunate to be able to learn from each of those institutions and hopefully we'll take the best that was done from each one of those schools," Presbyterian athletics director Bee Carlton said.

"Every model is a little bit different."

Expansion may not be done. Kallander only said, "membership is on every agenda when our CEOs get together," when asked if further expansion talks were on the docket for next month's conference presidents' meetings.

Gardner-Webb, an associate Big South football member that competes in the Atlantic Sun in other sports, has expressed interest in joining the Big South full-time.

Longwood, another provisional Division I school, has expressed public interest in joining the Big South, but Kallander will not comment publicly on Longwood's application.
