Old Fogie Alert!!
So last nite (and for the next month) VH1 played their tribute to THE WHO. Talk about a walk down memory lane! For starters, the Foo Fighters (who I don't care for) Pearl Jam and Incubus did a GREAT job covering the songs. The Flaming Lips?!?! Who the crap are they and what teh crap were the singing! Adam Sandler did a nice Magic Bus/Who Tribute song and Tenacious D had a nice little renition of Squeeze Box
Now for the main event: The WHO were/are AWESOME. Sure there are only 2 live members of the band left but still, they can bring it. Seeing the old footage of Keith Moon confirms my belief that he was the best drummer/percussionist EVER in rock music. Pete Townsend had a great quote on his relationship with Roger Dalhtery (sp) "I never realized how hard it must have been for him to be the least talented member on stage with three musical genius's". I think that may sum it up. Peter later said that once he came to that realization he began to see where Roger's talents really were and came to understand that no one interpreted his music better then Roger did. Sort of a nice compliment. IMHO, it was a great scene of an Artist (Townsend_ and an Entertainer (Roger) and how they can make it work. (Flash to EVH and DLR of Van Halen!)
Ton's of emotion and energy. Worth seeing if you can and TURN IT UP!!!
Should we start a top 10 list of Who Songs?? OK you convinced me:
1. Eminence Front
2. Reign O'er Me
3. Won't Get Fooled Again
4 Baba Oreilly
5. Behind Blue Eyes
6. Bargain
7. My Generation
8. Who Are You
9. Join Together
10. Pinball Wizard

Yeah, the Flaming Lips are a bit different. You might remember them from back in the mid-90's with the "She don't like jelly, she uses Vaseline" song. They got play a little more recently with "Do You Realize?" which always sounded to me like the theme song to a crappy 1970's romance movie.

I thought the show was great overall. I was pleasantly surprised by Incubus. The were very good. Foo Fighters were okay but I guess Dave Grohl was a bit under the weather so that explained why the guy from Supergrass took over vocals on their second song. Pearl Jam was great. I thought Tenacious D was good. For the Who, I thought Daltrey's voice was a big weak at the beginning but got better as it went on. Great show and a great honor for one of the greatest bands ever. I might have to give Quadrophenia another listen this weekend.
