Yeah yeah...I know its pretty much a Catholic thing...but I think it is a good time to deny ourselves something and reflect on how God provides all we really need.

I am giving up junk food...including soda and caffeinated drinks. This is going to be tough as I am a soda junkie...but there is some evidence that soda (even diet) can mess with your cholesterol numbers and can actually slow your metabolism down.

You'll feel a ton better Fumble. I did it about 4 years ago and in addition to losing 10 pounds in a month, also just felt better. I've incorporated them back in in the last year occassionally but I used to drink them almost every day before I quit. You'll be amazed at energy levels after a couple of weeks.

Its not a lent thing, but I am backing off soda right now as well. Its not been as difficult as I expected. But filling the void with juices has been more expensive than I expected.

And since somebody brought up cholesterol, could some of you Genworth guys tell your bosses to quit sticking it to those of us with genetically high cholesterol? They are bleeding me dry.

if juice is too expensive drink water and refill the bottles. thats what I do, its the cheapest and healthiest way to go. if you don't like water throw a crystal light pack in there

I drink a ton of bottled water and I use those packets from Wyler's much of the time. But I need a little kick with my meals some of the time and juice seems to be the only thing that fills the soda void. Hopefully I can wean myself down to water only with meals. But I'm not there yet.

Try those flavored sparkling water drinks. You can find them at Walmart or just about any grocery store--I think the brand at Walmart is Clearly Canadian or something like that. They are like like 2 for $1 and come in a liter bottle. That will give the fizz and sweetness that you get from soda, but without the sugar and calories.

Artificial sweeteners are more dangerous than regular sugar. It's best you never drink diet sodas or any flavored water with aspartame or sucralose.

Sure, if you're dumping massive doses directly into your veins. Any nutritionist will tell you that, short of cyanide and snake venom, regular sugar is pretty much the most unhealthy substance on earth.

As pertaining to food, if God made it, eat it. If man made it, don't eat it.
Aspartame is, by far, the most dangerous substance on the market that is added to foods.

Aspartame is the technical name for the brand names NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, and Equal-Measure. It was discovered by accident in 1965 when James Schlatter, a chemist of G.D. Searle Company, was testing an anti-ulcer drug.

Aspartame accounts for over 75 percent of the adverse reactions to food additives reported to the FDA. Many of these reactions are very serious including seizures and death.(1) A few of the 90 different documented symptoms listed in the report as being caused by aspartame include: Headaches/migraines, dizziness, seizures, nausea, numbness, muscle spasms, weight gain, rashes, depression, fatigue, irritability, tachycardia, insomnia, vision problems, hearing loss, heart palpitations, breathing difficulties, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, loss of taste, tinnitus, vertigo, memory loss, and joint pain.

According to researchers and physicians studying the adverse effects of aspartame, the following chronic illnesses can be triggered or worsened by ingesting of aspartame:(2) Brain tumors, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, chronic fatigue syndrome, parkinson's disease, alzheimer's, mental retardation, lymphoma, birth defects, fibromyalgia, and diabetes.

Aspartame is made up of three chemicals: aspartic acid, phenylalanine, and methanol. The book "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," by James and Phyllis Balch, lists aspartame under the category of "chemical poison."
While avoiding sugar is the best option, if you absolutely have to have something sweet, better to use organic sugar.
