So yesterday I was looking on the splash page and saw the announcement saying the c-lab will no longer be open 24 hours....which doesn't effect me at all since I have a computer and live off campus so I don't deal with loud dorm rooms. I turned to my girlfriend and I told her about it, and I said, "I wonder how long until they start a facebook group about this one" ....she then laughed because she hates facebook and refuses to get one.

Well, I get back from work last night get online and check my e-mail. I see that I have a group invitation to join the student's against the new c-lab hours group....I laughed, because I didn't expect it so soon with break happening and everything...

anyways, the moral of the story is facebook is crazy....and there are new clab hours....it is no longer open 24 hours....

It's kinda nice....LUPD being called every night because students are fighting, or they are fighting with workers not letting people in after 12, or because they are being too loud, or not having a lab pass.....

It was being used for social purposes, although it doesn't effect me b/c I live off campus...

Everyone that works at the clab is so happy about it.

no the announcement on the splash page says for next semester....i understand students being upset...some students work all day and then don't have a computer to use and really need to use the lab....I didn't join the group because i am sick of all these groups...and plus it doesn't effect me...

If LUPD is being called up everynight would it make sense to have an officer or 2 up there? Give them some tazers and we're good to go!!! haha, thats a joke by the way people

These kids aren't going to the lab to study. They're going to socialize and get out after curfew. The big joke on campus is that the best club in town is Club C-Lab. People are just whining.

I saw on their that some idiot goes, "I have to use the computer lab because I need Powerpoint and don't have Microsoft Office on my computer." He can get Microsoft Office through LU for like 10 bucks. That simply either a) being cheap as crap or b) ignorant as crap.

Most of these kids complaining have no clue what goes on behind the scenes.

you're right SJ....I am sure the majority (70%) that are complaining just go up there to mainly socialize. When I lived on campus I never understood the whole going up to the computer lab to hang out, especially once they stopped manning the guard shack. You could just drive off campus and go to waffle house, ihop or whatever...which is what I perfered since people in the lab are annoying

With all of that said I do know plenty of students that work until 11 at night every night during the week. They have no computers or there roommates are so loud where they need to go to the quiet rooms in the computer lab to get work done. It is a shame that these people have to suffer from people's stupidity, but that is life for you. Suffering because of the idiots....

I do think the leaders of the group are going about things the right way...its others in the group that I am sure are just clueless....

I'll need it for Photoshop, Quark/Indesign and possibly Avid next semester...basically the only reason I go to the C-Lab is to use one of those programs, all the other times I stay in my room.

Download Photoshop and use Sony Vegas instead of Avid. Avid is the devil. You can get the other two for free.

yeah, there are a lot of programs up there, especially as far as video editing goes that aren't cheap and nobody is going to go just run out and buy this software....it sucks for those students, especially when trying to finish a project

If done the right way and in compliance with the liberty way this could get changed. So many times students jump the gun, start petitions without approval, try to stage protests without approval and end up shooting themselves in the foot. If these people contact the right people they could very well accomplish something. They must be polite and not rude. Another thing a lot of Liberty students have a problem with doing when they don't get their way. The e-mail whoever they feel screwed them over and are rude about the whole thing. That will get you nowhere....

I like Avid...some people don't....how do you feel about it? ha

Can you say Home schooled?

see this is where i think you and i disagree about home schooled kids...they may be awkward and not quite mastered the social skills, but as far as getting upset when they don't get their way, i don't quite see it....it comes from all the spoiled rich kids at this school that got everything they ever asked for from mommy and daddy...they get their tuition paid for, car paid for, insurance paid for, rent paid for, food paid for and still aren't grateful and they think the world owes them everything....these are the kids that whine about not getting their own way, not the home schoolers...at least that is how i see it

I see it as a mix of the two.

well, it can be...but most home schooled kids aren't spoiled....they just don't know hot to communicate...but anyways...regardless...liberty has a bunch of idiots that are spoiled and don't know how to go about things the right way. The dress codes changes that happened didn't happen on accident...SGA president at the time Chris Gaumer took an organized approach to the right people and things began to change in a positive way for the students. If these students really want this to change they will do it in a way not to upset anybody that matters or breaking the rule that are in place, like them or not.

I'd heard LU's deal with the devil... err... Microsoft ended, and that the bookstore now sold the Student edition of Office, which sells for something like $100. Did I hear wrong?

ehhh...the computer deals aren't that great...the software deals are amazing though and anybody that doesn't have complete microsoft office is an idiot if they don't get this offer. As soon as the new Microsoft OS is available on there i will probably get it

I applaud those in charge of the CLab. It's been a joke for along time and there certainly is no studying going on there anymore. The only thing this really effects is when people need to do group projects and after hours is the only time those are available.

I have some insight into this issue...

First, everyone is dead on when they said it's become a social scene. It's technically the only place on campus students are allowed to be late at night, so it becomes a madhouse. That alone might not be so bad if LU would pay to staff the ILRC with more than THREE people during those hours. 600 students versus 3 or 4 lab attendants just isn't a fair fight.

Second, even though the students who are breaking the rules know that they're doing it, they act like the ILRC workers are being jerks for enforcing them. It's their job, and you're breaking the rules. Get over it and get out. The fist fights, threats and immaturity shown by the students in the lab this semester are all directly responsible for why the lab hours are changing.

Finally, LUPD hasn't been helping the ILRC staff out. They're well aware of the situation but for whatever reason don't want to be bothered with it. My understanding is that they're saying they're also too understaffed to help in the lab at night. While I'm positive that they are understaffed (because most departments doing any real work at LU are), during those hours I can't think of a better place to have an officer stationed. The physical confrontations and threats received by some of the ILRC staff can only be handled by an officer from LUPD. They're the only ones with the power to physically remove students. If they won't do it, Information Services has no other choice than to close the lab.

Again, I don't fault LUPD for this. I think this rests 100% on the immaturity of the students who have abused the system to the point of collapse.

Question for consideration: Is this a computer lab issue or a curfew issue?

Is LU targeting the problem or the symptoms?

its both.

clab: workers hate dealing with people's crap

curfew: people sign out to clab, get a pass and stay with their friends

Even though LUPD may be understaffed this is no excuse for there not being a police presence up there. If they are having such issues up there then the first step should be having an officer or two up there. I think that is more important then making sure people aren't running the stop sign next to the Vines Center (if there is really violence involved). This should be the step taken first, then if it continues to be a problem take it away. Make this a warning to students. If they continue to act out and disrespect everybody including the LUPD officers up there then get rid of the overnight hours...that the way I see it, now its off to take a final....man I feel bad for the people that had to hold off on leaving because of this thing. I am staying til next week so it doesn't matter...alright i am done.....later kid

I agree, and so did the folks in the ILRC. However, since LUPD refused to cooperate then the only option they had left was to close the lab. It's unfortunate, but I still don't blame LUPD. This is a problem with the conduct of the students on our campus. I've said it before and I'll say it again, if you give LU students an inch, they take a mile, spray paint it and make a few pot holes along the way. The lab late at night was just another example of that.
