This really shouldn't surprise anyone. Shock, yes, but not surprise. I don't know how this hasn't come to light previously. The sad thing so many times it's on full display right there on the big screen, and no one calls them on it. So many people to blame, not the least the parents of child actors who allow their kids to be perverted like this.

If a spate of recent allegations proves true, Hollywood may have a hideous epidemic on its hands. The past two weeks have brought three separate reports of alleged child sexual abuse in the entertainment industry.

Martin Weiss, a 47-year-old Hollywood manager who represented child actors, was charged in Los Angeles on Dec. 1 with sexually abusing a former client. His accuser, who was under 12 years old during the time of the alleged abuse, reported to authorities that Weiss told him "what they were doing was common practice in the entertainment industry." Weiss has pleaded not guilty.

On Nov. 21, Fernando Rivas, 59, an award-winning composer for “Sesame Street,” was arraigned on charges of coercing a child “to engage in sexually explicit conduct” in South Carolina. The Juilliard-trained composer was also charged with production and distribution of child pornography.

Registered sex offender Jason James Murphy, 35, worked as a casting agent in Hollywood for years before his past kidnapping and sexual abuse of a boy was revealed by the Los Angeles Times on Nov. 17. Murphy’s credits include placing young actors in kid-friendly fare like "Bad News Bears," "The School of Rock," "Cheaper by the Dozen 2” and the forthcoming "Three Stooges.”

Revelations of this sort come as no surprise to former child star Corey Feldman.

Feldman, 40, himself a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, unflinchingly warned of the world of pedophiles who are drawn to the entertainment industry last August. "I can tell you that the No. 1 problem in Hollywood was and is and always will be pedophilia,” Feldman told ABC’s Nightline. “That's the biggest problem for children in this industry... It's the big secret.”

Or maybe it's just because of Penn State, everybody wants to talk about it because there's millions of evil pedophiles lurking behind every corner, waiting to snatch all our children!

People have such irrational fears...

with the desensitizing of sex in our culture, as well as acceptance of fringe sexual proclivities i'm not surprised at all by this type of stuff.

Agreed. While it's great that these perverts are being brought to light, I am afraid that in the end the whole process will serve to de-sensitize socitey even more to it and dare I say even begin to create an acceptibility about it? Sickening.

It is not irrational to believe that pedophilia is rampant in such a shady business as entertainment much less society as a whole. Sexual abuse of children is so commonplace that most police departments can't handle the workload of all of the reports. Unless there is airtight evidence they don't even bother seriously investigating most cases.

+1

Come work where I work jbock (ok, you can't...we have a hiring freeze through at least next October) and read the records of abused children, I can promise you there is a serious problem out there and its more widespread and pervasive than you might think. What this type of abuse does to these kids is just awful and heartbreaking.

A. You are right. I see it everyday. I think part of it is the requirement to report. Maybe I wasn't aware of it as much growing up, but there is a lot more child abuse (and I don't mean spanking ) then most people realize

Perhaps here's a way to put it. Why are so many Americans scared of flying, when the chances of a plane crashing are so minimal compared to a car? Because every time it happens, the media reports it.

In the same way, one kid is molested. The media reports it, and the next thing you know, there's 5 pedophiles living right next to you. Or so you like to think.

But it doesn't matter. I know that you all will go back to calling me an insensitive jerk, instead of opening your mind to what I'm saying. I don't play those games to convince you that I'm not. Just safe to say, if it weren't for Penn State, nobody would ever be pretending to care. As if claiming abuse in Hollywood doesn't help advance the career of certain people.

Sometimes it takes a huge story to alert people to the dangers that are out there. Many times the media is just using scare tactics. In the case of child abuse, I'm sorry to say that it is pretty widespread. I went to a training last week about how to handle suspicions of child abuse. As a first year teacher I was shocked to hear the stories that some of the other teachers were telling about incidents they have witnessed.

I'll just say this. I'm fully aware of child abuse. I just choose not to live in constant fear that a pedophile lurks around every corner.

I'd assume that you're out of their target demographic anyway.

no one said to live in constant fear. There is a difference between be aware and educating yourself and being in constant fear. There is such a HUGE difference between a plane crashing and the abuse of children. The chances of the later happening is much larger then I think you either want to admit or realize. It could be you are simply ignorant on the topic and just feel the need to stir things up for the fun of it. Who knows.

I know of 4 people that have said they were abused as children sexually. Those are 4 people that admit it. Its a shameful thing for victims to admit.

Again its not being paranoid, its being in touch with reality.

I have never seriously been upset by things you have said but honestly this kind of crap makes you just look completely out of touch. Its almost comical if it weren't so sad.

And I have friends too who have been abused. It's personal to me. And because of that, it's affected my life as well.

But I just decided I'd point out what nobody else wants to say.

jbock, you can argue it all you want, but will change your mind when you become a parent. Nothing beyond salvation will change the way you think more than parenthood.

Besides, the argument you are making really has little to do with the thread. It has nothing to do with scaremongering or media hype. Those articles and arrests are a result of real things happening, and more reports of this being rampant in the entertainment industry. I just hope it opens a lot of eyes about Hollywood.

Yeah, it's a main reason I don't watch any movies honestly. Hellywood is good way to describe what goes on there.

Of course the media goes with whatever story is hot and tries to stir up fear, its what they do with EVERYTHING. But I believe sexual abuse is something not talked about enough in this country and its a VERY serious problem so if it makes more people aware of that then I think its great.

Wait, weren't you just attacking the messengers with your initial post in this thread, throwing allegations against the media of scare mongering?

I was attacking the message and the messenger.

I'm done with this though. Just trying to liberate some fresh thinking.
