Tanks for the Memory

A bunch of snow-covered tanks have been bewildering local residents for a few weeks.

About 200 abandoned armored vehicles, mostly Soviet-made T-72 tanks and tracked SP artillery mounts, are awaiting their fate at a small railway station near Ekaterinburg.

Their presence was revealed after a local news website E1.RU posted a video of the tanks, covered in a deep layer of snow and resting peacefully between the railroad and the woods with no military personnel in sight.
"There are tanks all over the forest, abandoned. If you need one, come and get it," an unnamed person behind the camera says in the video posted on E1.RU, as the camera spins around to show dozens of unguarded tanks.

Locals say the tanks were brought there by a special train, unloaded and left unguarded since last November.
The hatches are not locked and anyone can get inside to feel like a real "tanky": all the equipment aboard looks operational, except there is no ammunition.

This kind of thing really doesn't suprise me. Russian army commanders have never been known for their professionalism or discipline. Even disasters like this aren't without precedence in Russian history. I can think of a ton of others, caused by blundering, corruption, gross incomptence and mismanagement, just from the years 1904-1919.

-Decision to go to war against Japan (1904)
-Handling of the land war against Japan (1904-1905)
-Battle of Mukden against Japan (1905)
-Battle of Tsushima Straights against Japan (1905)
-Personal rivalry between War Ministry and General Staff (1912-1914)
-Battle of Tannenberg (1914)
-the loss of Przemysl (1915)
-The entire year of 1915
-The Brusilov Offensive (1916)
-Kolchak's offensive agaisnt Bolsheviks (1919)
-Denikin's offensive against Bolsheviks (1919)

The list goes on and on...
