I meant you in particular as well as the rest in the group. As in everyone called this guy Josh "Warlord Emeritus." What were some of the cooler names? The wierd names? Your name? It seems the potential for awesome warlord names is infinite, and you now have my curiosity.

Warlord Emeritus was more of an honorary title for Josh in honor of his graduation and departure from the club. We have two brothers who both took the nickname "the Left" (one of them to distinguish himself from another guy who had the same name. Other than that there arent a whole lot of names of note. I didnt have a nickname...since BJ in and of itself is a nickname anyway

thank you for posting this.

I wanted to ask when I saw "Warlord Emeritus", and the spirit was willing, but the flesh was too weak to do so in that forum.

I was hoping someone else shared my fascination.

Josh was a great guy...he along with Zach Smith (someone else CJ should be familiar with) got the club going back in 2005. it started out as a few people meeting over on the hill on Saturday afternoons, and the club has slowly progressed since then. the biggest exposure came back when dorm 7 dressed up as Spartans and fought the club (there are still debates as to who actually won because it felt like they didnt want to play by the SFC's rules of engagement and combat). Josh and Zach then graduated and moved on and the club is now led by Matthew Lundy and Peter Young (both are in grad school I think). the club isnt as large as it was but they do get a lot of new faces and there are others who have taken to making weapons now (although Matt and Peter still do when time allows). If I took a picture of all the weapons that have been made Id need a wide angle lens.

why do reality TV shows have to be so fake? Doesn't that defeat the purpose?

I still don't know if I should laugh or cringe whenever the SFC is brought up. I'm leaning more toward the laughing side of things.

Yeah, I used to love Operation Repo, but the more I watched it, the more I became convinced all of it is absolutely fake and set up. It makes me mad, but not as mad as when someone gets on Dirty Jobs when their job really isn't all that dirty or cool.

Back in the late 90's we had a guy on our dorm who wanted to start something like the SFC. He thought he was a blackbelt or something (but was terribly out of shape and slow) and had these wooden sticks that people could spar with. His nickname was Ninja Fish. He was roommates with Sleepy Dan, who was always sleepy because he was on anti-depressants. Dorm nicknames are the coolest, and I can't believe for a minute that BJ didn't have one, regardless of the BJ logic that 'BJ' is in itself a nickname. Tricknee will work for now.

Goodness. Every time you explain something you throw something out there like this and I can help but ask. What rules? And what did that dorm do? Throw grenades?

It must have felt like the last samurai

And Saint Attila raised the hand grenade up on high, saying, "O Lord, bless this thy hand grenade, that with it thou mayst blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy."

"First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it.

Well for safety reasons there are rules that the SFC has followed since its inception. I think there were people hit in the head (which is not allowed), and they didnt take hits when someone hit them and "took a limb off".

The rules that I can think of off the top of my head are:

1. Strikes only to the arms and legs (no hand/wrist strikes) and torso (care is to be taken if fighting a girl as to not hit the bust area)
2. Pull all strikes (the weapons are PVC core and you can break something if you arent careful)
3. No ranged weapons (that rule actually was taken out when someone in the club figured out how to make proper arrows and brought and started bringing a bow and arrow to club events)
4. Take all hits unless the opponent clearly missed or hit a point of armor (some people wear bracers on their wrists so they dont get them broken in a fight)

Monty Python and the Holy Grail is a wicked awesome movie. I used to watch it a ton in middle school and freshman year of high school lol

So how does it work from an operations perspective?

Do you guys just get together and nail each other? Or is it an organized process?
Is it like capture the flag? Defend the tower? Free for all? Save the princess(does comeone actually dress up like a princess)?

Do you have special powers/weaknesses? Or is it just a medival times type thing?

Has anyone talked about turning this into a multiple clan thing? Where each group has their own shield/flag? I mean this sounds very interesting.

You could even hire Adam Godwin and Mo from the Nickelodeon show "Guts " from the early 90's. That'd be a nasty combo right there.

There are a few different games that are played along with the usual team melee, deathmatch and capture the flag: Bombing run (think ultimate frisbee with a ball and everyone carrying a sword), Zombies, Regicide (kill the king...pretty self explanatory), they also have honor duels (one one one fights, best two out of three) among others. Ops wise its a pretty organized process. Peter and Matt (the current heads of the club) keep most of the club's swords (when much of the SFC lived on dorm 31 the year before I graduated we kept them all in the storage closet in one of the quads), they also are in charge of keeping the rules so things are run pretty smoothly too. As for clans, I dont think that has been tried or discussed, And there really isnt any need for a referee because everybody is pretty well versed in the rules of hits that count and what hits dont (and most people are pretty good about calling hits on themselves). Also no special powers/ "magics" are allowed (which also means no weaknesses)
