I mentioned this on Facebook and Twitter over the weekend but I wanted to repeat it on here since there are other parents on the board.
Do not take your small children to see Coraline!
We went to a breast cancer fundraiser over the weekend at a Studio Movie Grill (the best chain of its type going hands down) here in Houston. Because of the fundraiser aspect, we weren't told what movies they would be showing. But we were told there would be three options and one would be childrens animated feature. So we loaded up the kids for a fun night out.
I admit I had never heard of Coraline but my 7-year-old son warned me that the commercials for the movie looked scary. But since we were there we decided to give it a try. Plus it was in Dolby 3D Digital Cinema. If you've heard about this latest cinematic format you understand why we wanted to check it out. The 3D was unbelievable in comparison to other formats in recent years. The glasses have alarms in them to keep anyone from taking them out of the theatre and they cost over $30 apiece to replace. Suffice it to say we'd love to see another film or two in this format.
Unfortunately the movie itself went from bad to worse as it progressed. My son asked if we could leave halfway through but I convinced him (and myself) that it would get better soon. It didn't. My two oldest have had nightmares the past two nights and get visibly shaken up at the mere mention of the movie.
Frankly, it creeped out my wife & I as well. There was no gore but the evil feeling you get watching it was way over the top. I cannot for the life of me figure out why they would classify this as a kids movie. The place was full of kids coming out crying and petrified.
Consider yourself warned. Now if you are a LU student or grownup and you want to see some amazing animation in spectacular 3D then I wouldn't stand in your way. But frankly there are way too many better options for kids that i see no reason to even let your kids see it in their own homes on DVD.
