Is America willing to give Microsoft another shot at getting an operating system right?

The software maker has lifted restrictions on the number of copies available to beta users.

Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) has dropped limits on the number of copies of the Windows 7 beta it plans to make available to PC enthusiasts after a crush of download requests for the new operating system brought its servers to a halt over the weekend.

"Due to an enormous surge in demand, the download experience was not ideal so we listened and took the necessary steps to ensure a good experience," Microsoft Windows communications manager Brandon LeBlanc wrote in a blog post Saturday.

"We have clearly heard that many of you want to check out the Windows 7 Beta and, as a result, we have decided to remove the initial 2.5 million limit on the public beta for the next two weeks," wrote LeBlanc, who said the limitless download period would extend through Jan. 24.

I don't mind Vista so much but 7 is going to have to be something special in order for me to switch again.

I wonder if the faculty laptops will be upgradable to Windows 7? I am very thankful they did not downgrade them to Vista when they had the chance. XP works great for me.

My laptop has been screwing up majorly and I was thinking of reformatting anyways. Now I may reformat and go back with Windows 7.

Although that may be dumb. That will be a discussion with Scorcho.

When I first bought a couple of Vista computers a year or so ago I had all kinds of problems. But since the 2nd service pack, it has been no issue at all. If 7 is up tot he billing, it will be my next OS. My laptop is seriously overheating way too fast.

Yeha my Dell gets hot really bad as well. I don't have that many gripes over Vista, no more than I had with XP and I may have even had more gripes with XP than I did with Vista. The only performance issues I have had with Vista from a hardware perspective is that my CPU isn't particularly great - if I have Media Center, Media Player, and a bunch of firefox tabs open my CPU usage is near 100% but the RAM is just fine with only 2 gigs.

Windows 7 is supposed to have the same minimum hardware requirements that Vista did when it was initially released, but those minimum hardware requirements are pretty cheap to get nowadays, so people looking to get a new computer with 7 or upgrade to 7 shouldn't have to fork out a ton of money to get it up to par. My next laptop purchase will most likely be a Dell Mini 12, I'll probably just wait until I can get it with Windows 7.

FYI I just upgraded my Mini to 2gb (it's max) and it was simple to do...took about 10 minutes

I have an overheating problem on my laptop...I think it's more of a Dell thing than anything. It stays around 80 degrees...which is just a shade under what Dell calls overheating at 85-90.

did you have to buy the ram directly from dell? i know with every other computer me and my family have had they have to make all their parts just a tad bit different to force you to buy from them.

yes, but then you have to fork out a ton more money and still buy windows 7 if you want it. it's illogical.

i haven't had a problem with mine overheating and shutting down, but i did get one of those fans just to be safe. also, I heard a neat tip the other day ago. if you have your laptop plugged in and the battery is fully charged, remove the battery and it won't get nearly as hot. i tried it with my dell and that seemed to help a lot. it still gets just as hot in certain spots, but overall it runs much cooler.
