Try downloading a HD trailer on your computer. I believe all the new movie trailers are available in HD. Although it is compressed to a smaller window (I think you can get full screen now though) on your screen, it doesn't take me much more than a minute to download a 2 minute trailer.
IMO, I think I could download a full 1080p movie in about 60-90 minutes. I don't believe that is too long. I remember when downloading songs took 30 minutes. Now you can download a song in 30 seconds (or less).
The movie/motion picture industry is not going to blow it like the recording industry did. They will not wait too long and allow piracy to become as big an issue as it is with music. I believe they will allow people to get the media in several different ways, instead of fighting it. Comcast already has HD movies on demand (although they are $2 more than the standard definition movies)
The internet is the future for everything regarding media IMO. That is why I believe this DVD format war, is going to end with both losing.
