Common myth. There are now over 30 million users of Mac OS X. While that number may be small in comparison to the Windows XP user base, it is significantly larger than the Mac OS 9 user base was in 2001 when Apple introduced Mac OS X. Yet, there were several hundred viruses for Mac OS 9. By your logic, there should never have been any Mac OS 9 viruses (or at least very few) because the user base was much smaller. In reality, Mac OS 9 was just much less secure than the OS that replaced it.

Two myths here.

First, that Macs are only good for creative uses. B.S. Macs are now the pre-eminent computing platform in the world. Why? Because you can run all three of the major operating systems in the world (Windows, Mac OS X and Linux) on a Mac. You can even virtualize them and run all three at the same time. No other computing platform can offer that. None. They also happen to be the best everyday computing platform in the world. Why? Better software, better hardware and better security. It's the triple threat of the computer world.

Second, that Macs are more expensive. If you do a feature for feature build, Apple will win in price every time. The problem is that people want to compare Apple hardware to whatever Dell's latest "get 'em while they're hot" $399 (WITH A FREE DVD BURNER AND FLATSCREEN!!!!!!! OMG!!!!!!) piece of junk is. They are not the same. PC companies want to sell you kit systems slapped together with very little thought toward how you the user will actually use it. Be it software or hardware, Apple thinks through every detail of how a machine will be used. This usually means including some hardware features and touches that would never be standard from other computer manufacturers. They may offer them, but they're certainly not standard. I, for one, appreciate having a total package right out of the box.

As for Mac users being cult-like and defensive, it's true. I will never ever start an argument with someone about which OS or what kind of hardware they prefer to use. Use what works for you. However, if you question me or make fun of what I choose, be ready to throw down. I use Macs because my experiences with them have been much much much better than my experiences using PC's and the various Windows OS's. Keep in mind that it is my JOB to use comptuers all day, every day. I've used nearly every operating system developed in the last 30 years. I've used hardware you didn't even know existed. At the end of the day, when I go home, I know which one was developed best, works best and will give me the least amount of hassle when I want to accomplish a task. Give me my MacBook Pro over any other computer, any time.

I'm not alone either. Alpha-geeks are switching in droves and while you make want to make fun of them, these are the people that determine how the rest of you will be using computers in ten years. Get used to it.

Except that I can just reboot my Mac into Windows and run the same games any other PC can. Then when I'm done playing, I can go right back to safety and superior usability of Mac OS X. But let's not get into gaming because consoles beat everything right now.

P.S.

We were talking about computers in a Coach McKay thread because early in the thread there was an insult toward Mac users.

Scorcho, I agree...consoles are better than computers when it comes to gaming.

And I liked the goober thing...along with the pentagon mom and elderberry-smelling dad plus the hamster and porkchop train as well

Hey, that's un unfortunate use of words, don't you think! I take offense for all of us nerds who have been fully involved in this great Mac vs PC debate.

I like Mac n Cheese if that helps! I think Coach McKay does too. There back on topic!

Not sure how this long drawn out statement changed anything

For what I use my computer for I do not need to spend the extra cash on a Mac...it just would be irresponsible of me to do so....I know you get a ton of stuff with a mac....but i would probably use like 25% of it if that....I don't see the point

Anyways...I get it you love macs....all mac users do...Heck, I love macs too....I think they are great....but I am not going to spend tons of money on a personal computer when all i use my computer for is surfing the internet and doing school work (papers, powerpoint, etc.)

Now back to being politically incorrect since 1971....

Since you're not into long drawn out statements, I'll make it simple. A Mac mini is $599. If you consider that a ton of money to spend on a computer, then I think we just have different philosophies about owning computers.

For the money, you'd be better off getting a macbook or imac for about 1K each. I'd call that inexpensive, especially when you consider that if you don't pay at least that much for your PC, then it's probally going to be disposable in a few years, and then ya gotta go out and buy a new one.

One point that wasn't made is the fact that Mac's are physically better built and from an engineering standpoint far superior in every way. My preschool aged kids possess my old powerbook from the nineties and play games on it and no matter how much abuse that thing takes, it just keeps tickin'.

I agree with everything that Scorcho said, and I'd like to add that anything good that happens with Windows is just an inferior imitation of the latest Mac-OS.
