Yes, but the easiest way around that for the iPhone is to jailbreak the phone and install whatever you want, including free tethering apps. Although today Engadget posted a link on how to update your carrier profile (as simple as opening a file) such that tethering is enabled.

My point is that there are ways around it if you're slightly technically inclined. For other people, they'll have to wait on AT&T.
a few of the techs have tethering on their iphone now....

Yes, but can you install apps from the app store, or are you just limited to jailbroken apps?

Hmm, so the official iTunes app store apps? i'll have to look into this. before the app store came about, i jailbroke man and really liked it - especially the ability to get themes for it - but with the app store, I could get basically everything i wanted from the app store (don't have an iPhone, only an iPod touch)

well nevermind, i wont do the jailbreak thing. i just read that everytime you upgrade to a new firmware and then jailbreak that you have to reinstall all the apps every single time.

I was going to sell it but I have fallen in love. Its amazing.

The Pre sounds like a great phone. So far the only bad things I've heard about the Pre is that the battery life sucks and that it's a bit slow to launch applications. Everything else has been positive. I just don't know if I'll be able to give up my Blackberry for it...

The few friends around me who have test drove the Pre have complained about the keyboard and operational speed. I haven't even touched one myself so this is just hearsay.

yeah, I don't know why they can't get this stuff right before they release it. Why do you have to rush it to market and make people regret their purchase until you finally upgrade it?

Make $$$ off phones so they can pay developers to fix issues and develop enhancements......Its pretty much what IT does everywhere..."is this something you can live with for now" ....response " sure well fix it then in a later release"

because regardless of those little issues, the phone is selling like a clean hooker....people know it will be fixed.

It just seems like it gives your brand a bad name. I hate to mention it, but we're all thinking it. Apple's products work like they're supposed to when they're released. They do release upgrades but it seems their upgrades are more to introduce new features that should have been included (cut and paste, landscape keyboard) rather than fixing major problems (slow operating speed). And because of this apple is treated like a god.

I've never met an iphone user that will admit there is a flaw. Even scorcho likes the idea that his phone won't run background apps. Why would you not want the option of running something in the background?

Ive had no problem with apps slow launching... The battery life is about the same as the blackberry, but I keep mine plugged into my laptop pretty much everywhere I go so it stays pretty full. I had a blackberry and I dont think its any worse than that. I was in LOVE with my blackberry, but this thing can do everything the BB does and more. I couldnt be happier, if you want my advice, let the blackberry go... its worth it.

the bolded is generally the problem. our guys here love their iphones but they complained about little things when they first got their phones too. the updates aren't all new features, lots of fixes too. battery issues and the like.

btw if you have an iphone, flight control is a must have game.

Well it syncs my calendar with outlook and google automatically which I love. It has a lot of applications that arent much but make things easier (Fandango, likeme, near me, etc.) The Internet browser is a full browser (no mobile sites). The Wifi connection (which i had never had but is a blessing). The navigation, I have found, is better software and more reliable. 8gb of memory for music and whatever else you could put on it. The camera works great with a flash (which im sure is everyones top concern, but im going to list everything I can think of at this moment). It has its own youtube app that comes on the phone which makes it easier to use. The other apps that BB doesnt have that Im sure you could find online Im sure would be helpful to some people that use it like a flight tracker and stuff. Its much easier to sync when plugging into the computer and easier to add/remove files from your phone when attached to the computer. The docview, which shows you all of your word documents and power points and stuff comes on it, which you have to pay for to get on a BB.

I still think the BB is very user friendly, but This thing is right with it maybe a little better.

Thats all I can think of right now.

As cool as that is, it's pretty expensive and I've read it charges slower than the AC adapter and is really just a novelty. But I have to emphasize, it is very cool.

TBGBG what BB did you have? Mine does most of that but it doesn't have Wifi which was pretty stupid. But they say that's by Verizon's request because their 3G network is so extensive Wifi is not needed. That sounds nice and is somewhat true EXCEPT FOR HERE! get off you duff and upgrade our network big red.

I had an old BB (8703e), had the world one (one of the first with the scroll ball instead of the trackwheel), and then I went back to the one with the side scroll and just stuck with it cause I liked it so much. From what Ive seen of the newer ones they didnt, but I might be wrong.

That's not quite true. It's not that I don't want the option, it's that I'm okay with the alternative implementation Apple has. All of the built-in Apple apps run in the background which covers mail, calendars, the iPod, SMS, etc. With the 3.0 OS all apps can get push notifications. So, for example, I can sign on with my IM app, close the app and if I get an IM, I get an instant notification without the app even being loaded. Less drain on the battery, more memory and processor free for doing other things.

That's not to say I wouldn't like to be able to background a couple of apps. Pandora is a good example of an app that would be nice in the background. However, that's about the only example I've got. Everything else works just fine as-is.

As for flaws, I admitted several on my blog back in early May.
