5.0 is finally released for the Storm. It's really what the Storm should have been when it was released and it's kind of embarrassing that it took RIM this long to get to this point, but it is awesome. Complete with fancy transitions from screen to screen that you would expect from a touch screen these days, momentum scrolling via a flick of the finger, faster camera loading and image capturing, and a whole lot more. I am a little annoyed that I'm having to redo a lot of my personal settings though.

Man...I have been waiting for 5.0 for the Tour but no luck yet. There are leaked versions out there, but I want to wait for the official release. It has been rumored to have been out for the last month or so.

How long has it been out for the Storm?

And BTW...if you completely backup your BB through the BB Desktop Manager, you will not have to redo all your personal settings. You will have to re-add all your 3rd party apps though.

I'm upgrading everything now. It's taken a while and still isn't done yet but hopefully it'll be worth it.

Texting now has the same interface that the new BBM had. I just can't find BBM anymore. I may have to re-download it.

that's weird. I still had all of my apps. I just had to re-sign into everything which is what I was whining about. Maybe because you did it from a mac it didn't back everything up, because macs are for homos.

Boy Genius Report wrote:Verizon announces the BlackBerry Storm2, available Wednesday for $179.99

Lovers of all things BlackBerry might want to stop on by their local Verizon dealer this Wednesday as that’s the day “a powerful new Storm rolls onto Verizon Wireless’ network” (sorry, we couldn’t resist.) Going for $179.99 on a 2-year contract after a $100 MIR — no word yet on full retail — the Storm2 is everything that Storm 9530 users could hope for in that it is reliable, dependable and has Wi-Fi.

yeah, it seems to me that it's just a little bit of a catch up upgrade with nothing really original besides their existing messaging. It's funny what a difference a year makes. Gizmodo barely acknowledges blackberry exists these days. In their article about how multitasking works on the different OSs they compare android vs apple vs WebOS vs Windows mobile 7. It's almost like they're trying to exclude RIM, which obviously can multitask and has been able to forever.

You need to find a happy medium. In other words, go Android. Get a real phone with real functionality.

Palm showed their hand too late. Even though WebOS is pretty good and the Pre was decent hardware, the company doesn't have it together enough to play in the game. HP swallowing them up is only going to make it worse for a while. Oh well.

Android, iPhone or even Blackberry (if you must), but I wouldn't touch WebOS for a long time. HP and Palm need to show some very clear direction and innovation relatively soon if they want people to lock into their platform.

Flash coming to android in May/June and then everybody else later sometime and then to Apple the month after never. That's a big middle finger.
If that's a big middle finger, then this is probably a kick in the crotch...
HTML5 video in Internet Explorer 9: H.264 and H.264 alone

By Peter Bright | Last updated about 6 hours ago

Microsoft has put its stake in the ground and committed to supporting H.264 in Internet Explorer 9. That the next browser version would support H.264 HTML5 video was no surprise (though the current Platform Preview doesn't include it, it was shown off at MIX10), but this is the first time that Microsoft has provided a rationale for its decision. More significantly, this is the first time the company has confirmed that H.264 will be the only video codec supported.

H.264 certainly has some advantages. It's standardized, resulting in wide support in both software and hardware. This also provies a migration path of sorts from Adobe Flash; the same H.264 video file can be played both in Flash and via the native browser support, which allows site owners to target both HTML5 and Flash users with a single codec.

with microsoft, mostly the internet explorer division, taking basically the same stance on flash as Apple does, the future for flash looks pretty bad.

It's a start.

http://www.precentral.net/hp-thinking-b ... er-devices
We know that HP is hot-to-trot to get webOS up and running on a tablet/slate device and obviously webOS is going to continue to run on smartphones, but this article on Forbes has us thinking: is HP thinking bigger?

"Smartphones are a part of this, but this is really about the Web operating system," Shane Robison, HP's chief strategy and technology officer, told Forbes. "It's a change in our business model to a connected device model." HP, he said, is assuming a world in which almost everything needs at least the potential to connect to the Internet.

Long-time followers of mobility may remember that 3Com (former Palm owner and soon-to-be fellow HP-owned subsidiary) had just such a vision with the Audrey. It didn't work then (the dot-com bust didn't help) and in general the dream of every device in your house getting an internet connection has always been of the pipe-variety. Perhaps HP thinks that time is coming?

We're not arguing that webOS should be slapped on any old thing - but it does raise an interesting question for us: what, at its core, is webOS? If it's a great multitasking smartphone OS, well, then shoehorning it into other devices isn't going to work so well. But what if HP buys into Palm's argument that webOS is, at its core, the best way to take the web and modern, HTML5 standards and turn it into a touch-friendly operating system? If so, then HP could be making a play to make webOS the best way to put "the web" on devices.

It very similar to the ideas behind Google's Chrome OS, but the direction that Palm has already said they are taking with the future of webOS sounds much more robust than Chrome OS.

Toasters? Bad idea. But HP is definitely thinking outside the smartphone box:

In his call to analysts Wednesday, Bradley identified vertical markets like health care and education in which devices might soon appear, sold through HP's partners.

My BB Storm seems to be on its last legs. I'd like to get a new phone but don't really want to get a new Storm. I'm not eligible for the upgrade with Verizon until next April. I don't want to do any of the jerk moves of threatening to switch plans and all of that because I'm perfectly happy with Verizon. However, here are my questions:

a) Is it possible to "upgrade" before you're actually eligible for the upgrade?
b) How bad does my phone have to be working to get it replaced?
c) Has anyone else ran into this (with Verizon) and if so, what did you do to replace your phone/upgrade?
