This is from a discussion board post in one of my doctoral classes (Conflict Resolution)...and seems pretty appropriate for this topic.
This author believes the root of all the conflict between the various populations is due to multiculturalism, where the individuality and diversity of the ethnic population is embraced, and, dare I say, catered to. This author’s ideas will be called outrageous by some, but all one has to do is read God’s instructions to the Israelites in Exodus, as He instructed His people to wipe out the inhabitants of the Promised Land completely, so as not to be corrupted by their ways and customs.

In this author’s opinion, that is what has happened in the U.S. Although this author can understand celebrating one’s heritage, does it have to be catered to--does a school have to make accommodations for multi-lingual education--do signs have to be bi-lingual to accommodate those who come into our country? The point is, if the immigrants, legal and illegal, have access to the same services that American tax-payers have, THEY should be the ones to adapt, and not the US adapting to them.

Take a look at Europe, in the early 20th and 21st centuries, where nationalism spread through Europe and led to WW I, contributed to WWII, and has resulted in unrest in the Balkan countries that exists even today. Kosovo, anyone? This author fears that is what we are headed to within our own country.

One last thought. If anyone can recall the historical aspect of the 1930’s to 1960’s; think back to your history texts, when the US was described as the “melting pot,” where all the immigrants melted in to US society. There did not seem to be such conflict as we experience today. Why? Because the U.S. was “US”--it was all for one--and the nationalism was for the USA--and not for the individual cultures. Even though in the larger cities, where you had the ethnic neighborhoods, it was still the USA and everyone was about their NEW country. Unfortunately, in this author’s opinion, the multicultural genie is out of the bottle, and this country can slowly be destroyed from within, just as ancient Israel was as its people intermarried with the local population and became corrupted.
