GPA did come up in one interview for me, but it was more of a footnote. I didn't have it in my resume, he asked what it was, I told him, he wrote it down.

If you came out with a 2.0 they will start to care. Didn't you provide a resume with your GPA on it?

All I'm saying is that there are legit things that you can learn about in a school format for most professions and that if you learn them it will reflect at least loosely in your grades. Not that all employers are looking for a 4.0 students but if you have a 2.0 it's going to be questioned in most professions. Because the questions becomes why did you get a 2.0? Are you lazy? incompetent? At least for that first job these are going to be questions. I get it that once your out of school it's real life experience that will matter.

I've never sent in a resume w/ a GPA on it and have never been asked for it. It's not important to 95% of potential employees.

I put my GPA on my resume, mainly b/c the advice I got was "If it's above a 3.0, put it on there," however I spoke with a couple people who got hired with me also out of college and they didn't put it on their resume and they weren't asked.

A select few employers it will make a difference, starting out it may give you an edge somewhere, but for the most part-based on what I've seen and heard-it doesn't make a difference. I only cared about getting a 3.0+ for a discount on my car insurance.

That's not true at all, especially if it's your first job out of school. Many companies won't let you in the door without at least a 3.0 or 3.2. Same goes for many internships. But, again, this whole discussion turns on what field you're talking about. Every profession/major is different.

My job with Liberty and my job currently never asked for a GPA and I didn't have it on my resume. What I knew and the way I came across in interviews got me the jobs, not the GPA.

I think Alumnus must be right on for this being about your field because I had to show may GPA for my job at LU (although it was basically just to prove it was above a 3.0 tutoring) my internship at Genworth and my current job at a financial planning firm.

For education jobs, you'll be asked your GPA. Of course, they'll want transcripts from college and it will be on there, but I've always been asked my GPA when I talked to people about ed jobs. Business jobs -- never. Ministry jobs -- never. It all depends on what you're going into, but you've got to have something that makes you stand out from the million other resumes they got for the job, whether that's GPA or internship experience or something else.

The only thing GPA will affect is whether or not you can pursue certain postgrad programs. If your GPA isn't great, it will limit the programs you can enter at many schools who have enough demand to be selective. Otherwise I agree that GPA really has little impact on the job market. If you graduate with honors, it is worth mentioning but won't be a make or break for anything.
