It is a litigator's dream and user's nightmare.

For crying out loud, let me have a Samsung Galaxy S2 here in the US.

I'm actually getting pretty sick of the S2 getting all the hype and STILL hasnt come out. In tech terms its been a year since it was reviewed and released in Europe.

As far as the Patents go. This has to stop. I hope the FCC steps in and no longer allows patents on certain things. I believe right now they only last for 12 years?? Something like that. It's complete nonsense to patent "a portable device that is only touch screen" or whatever other vague patents that exist. This completely goes against what we are built on as a country...competition is good for everyone.

Leo the Tech Guy thinks that this is the reason Google is buying Motorola Mobility, for the patents and the legal protection that they bring.

That's true. Don't be surprised to see them spin off Moto b/c I dont believe the stock holders or Google for that matter want to see them in the device business. Ask HP how well trying to do both works (OS and Devices).

Apple does both with a fair amount of success. I have a feeling that Google will give the hardware business a try and if it doesn't fly within 12 months then it is getting sold to the Chinese. I'm not sure Motorola is the hardware manufacturer I would choose to buy. But hey, when opportunity knocks you need to listen.

one of the brains behind the moto droid is an elder at my dads church. he and a majority of that team were laid off in novemberish, but I'm really interested in his thoughts on all of this. i know a few weeks ago he was in the bay area and had an interview at a company he couldn't say because of unreleased details, pure speculation on my part thinks google

Leo Laporte was saying that Google only had around 1000 patents (maybe it was double that?), but with buying Motorola, they now have over 12,000. And the money they spent on Motorola was about two years worth of income for Google, so it didn't come cheap.

Google would have been smart to take WebOS off of HP's hands at a much cheaper price, though I don't know if the two OS's would have been easily compatible.
