How in the world the IOC came to the decision to award the Games to Beijing is baffling to me. Between the air and water quality (along with the whole communist government thing), this is a complete disaster waiting to happen.
On a bit of a side note, algea similar to this is one of the most promising future sources of renewable energy. It has no other significant value, can be grown and harvested cheaply and converted to ethanol more effeciently than corn.

It also may find it's way to a buffet near you.
State media reported that 100,000 tons of the algae had already been taken out of the water. Much of it was being transported to farms as feed for pigs and other animals, according to news reports.
