A friend of mine just e-mailed me and asked if 'The Iraq' is anything like 'The Ohio State University'.

Just remember boys, there are a lot of things you can fix later, but stupid is forever.

I'm paraphrasing Ron White, but hopefully the point is still made.

Im actually in the field crew (real proper way of saying band manager) because I blew my knee out two years ago in a freak accident trying to hustle down a hill over on East Campus and get to class. I was hoping to play trombone this year but my knee can't take teh daily pounding. Id probably hasten reconstructive knee surgery if I marched.

I know I'm going to regret asking this but...

...define blown-out knee for me there. I find it hard to believe that you tore your ?CL and are out just walking around without ever having had reconstructive knee surgery.

Well I probab ly should clarify. I actually only partially tore my ACL and also tore my meniscus when I slipped on a hill as I was walking to class. my left foot shot out and I essentially fell into a hurdler position on the hill and bent my right knee so far that I actually sat on my right ankle. The doctor when he told me about it said that I could still walk on it but that Id have to have more surgery at some point.

I bet that was hilarious to see. But certainly unfortunate for you.

Not so fast, my friend...
...it is quite possible for some athletes to play with a partial tear (with proper rehab and guidance from a Certified Athletic Trainer), or what might be called an "ACL deficient knee." BJ might be perfectly fine walking and taking part in normal daily activities, but things like <del>stalking</del> marching could definitely be contraindicated.

that is the term the guy who did the arthroscopic procedure used. Some days it feels great, and some days I only walk with a very pronounced limp. I have to wear a brace a lot of the time too. I actually had to have staples in my knee after the surgery for almost a week.

My buddy was the first person in the burg to have both his ACL's replaced at the same time. Both were torn and he walked on them for 4 months before getting surgery. He tore one playing football for LU years ago and the other playing basketball, so it is possible although he did have some discomfort.

You guys have higher pain tolerances than me, especially in your knees. I've sprained my right one God knows how many times (once in hockey, once in baseball, and numerous tweaks).

My point guard at William Campbell in my 1st and final year of coaching high school ball tore his ACL in the last football game and couldn't play for me. However he could still walk and even run but he couldn't cut. He actually wanted to postpone surgery until after hoops season but I didn't feel right letting him play a whole season on that bad knee knowing he could play college baseball or football. So yes I agree it is quite possible to walk around with an ACL tear.

I may have made a mistake by doing this but I actually showed up to band practice the afternoon after my arthroscopic procedure (although I was as high as Jimmi Hendrix sitting on the sidelines)
