Who cares? We're winning. That's what matters.

Anyhow. The first four runs in the 2nd are all earned. Any that score after that are not. Impressive rally after the first two girls got out.

I don't know. I would probably say 4 runs were earned. We probably have 5 extra base hits and we are not even out of the second inning. Bases loaded 2 outs right now.

That's great. The run rule will help the girls get off the field early. It's going to be a long 17 day stretch for them.

Offense Abounds For Lady Flames In 9-4 Victory Over Princeton

March 2, 2007
Chapel Hill, N.C.

Jessica Moore had her 10th career multiple home run game with two round trippers against Princeton to open play at the Tar Heel Invitational on Friday.

The Lady Flames pounded out 12 hits, including two home runs by Jessica Moore, en route to a 9-4 victory over Princeton, Friday afternoon, at Williams Field in Liberty’s first game at the Tar Heel Invitational.

The Lady Flames wasted little time jumping out to a lead as Liberty plated three runs in the top of the first inning. Dawn Jeffs led off the frame with an infield single, followed by a walk to J’nae Jefferson.

That set the stage for Jessica Moore to connect on her first home run of the year and the 40th of her career as her three-run blast to straightaway center field gave Liberty a 3-0 lead.

Liberty added to its advantage in the top of the third inning as Jefferson was issued another free pass. After moving to second on a failed pick-off attempt, Jefferson scored on a base hit back up the middle by Ashley Williams, pushing Liberty’s lead to 4-0.

The Tigers strung together a trio of hits to plate their first run of the game in the bottom half of the third, starting with a single to right field by Lauren Bierman. After moving to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a single to the gap in right-center field by Jackie Araneo, Bierman scored on a base hit down the left-field line off the bat of Kathryn Welch, trimming Liberty’s lead to three runs, 4-1.

The score remained the same until the top of the fifth when Moore connected on a solo homer high off the fair pole down the left-field line, giving Liberty a 5-1 lead and Moore her 10th career multiple home run game.

Princeton cut the lead back to three runs, 5-2, in the bottom of the fifth inning as Bierman led off the inning by drawing a walk. Bierman was replaced by Ellen Scott at first base as a pinch runner and she later scored on a sacrifice fly by Welch.

But Liberty put the game out of reach in the top of the sixth inning as the Lady Flames added four more runs on three hits. The scoring outburst was highlighted by a RBI base hit by Moore, a misplayed ball in the outfield that allowed Jefferson and Williams to score and a double steal that included pinch runner Beth Hensley crossing the plate.

Moore led the Lady Flames from the plate as the senior was 3-for-5 with five RBI. Shannon McKain (2-for-3), Beth Bennett (2-for-4) and Jeffs (2-for-4) all finished the game with multiple hits as well.

Sarah Ellis upped her record to 3-1 on the year as she allowed two runs on five hits in 4 2/3 innings of work. Sarah Swor finished off the final 2 1/3 innings of the game, allowing two runs on four hits, to pick up her first save of the year and the eighth of her career, making her Liberty’s new career saves leader.

The Lady Flames will face Fairfield later on this evening in a single game outside the tournament, while Liberty will return to tournament action tomorrow when they close out pool play against Rhode Island (10 a.m.) and Marshall (12:15 p.m.).

Lady Flames Continue To Hit In 8-0 Win Over Fairfield

March 2, 2007
Chapel Hill, N.C.

Beth Bennett was 3-for-3 against Fairfield, including a two-run homer to help Liberty to the 8-0 victory.

For the second-straight game, the Lady Flames pounded out 12 hits with six coming off the bats of Beth Bennett and Ashley Williams en route to an 8-0 victory over Fairfield, Friday evening, at Williams Field.

With the pair of victories on the day, the Lady Flames raise their season-to-date record to 6-3 on the year and the offensive outburst accounts for Liberty’s second and third time this year the Lady Flames have racked up 10 or more hits in a game.

The Lady Flames jumped out to a quick lead again, this time plating two runs on four hits and leaving the bases loaded in the top of the first. Dawn Jeffs started the game with a double to the gap in left-center field, followed by a bunt single off the bat of J’nae Jefferson, giving Liberty runners at the corners.

Jefferson stole second and Erin Frank’s attempted throw sailed into center field, allowing Jeffs to score. Three batters later, Beth Bennett singled through the left side of the infield, driving in Jefferson from third to give Liberty the early 2-0 edge.

The Lady Flames continued to add to their advantage in the top of the second inning as Liberty plated four runs on four hits, with all the damage coming with two outs. Jefferson walked, followed by a RBI triple off the fence in right field by Jessica Moore.

Ashley Williams kept things moving for Liberty with a double shapely hit down the left-field line, driving in Moore. Bennett capped off the four-run frame by hitting her second home run of the year, with the two-run blast to left giving Liberty a 6-0 lead.

A pair of two-out hits in the top of the third inning padded the Lady Flames’ advantage. Williams singled through the left side of the infield to drive in Jessica Leary, who reached on a single to right field. Bennett followed with a shot down the left-field line, driving in Moore to push Liberty’s lead to 8-0.

Bennett led the Lady Flames in the five-inning victory as the sophomore was 3-for-3 with a season-high four RBI, followed by Williams who was 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. Jefferson and Moore both finished the contest 1-for-3 with two runs scored and Leary was 1-for-2 with a run scored.

Terra Lowe picked up her first victory of the year in grand fashion as the senior allowed just two base runners in the contest on a lead-off walk in the second and a base hit up the middle in fourth. Lowe fanned six and walked one to record her sixth career shutout.

The Lady Flames return to full-time action in the Tar Heel Invitational tomorrow when they square off against Rhode Island (10 a.m.) and Marshall (12:15 p.m.) to close out pool play, setting up the championship round on Sunday.

I lied about the gametracker thing. Sorry! Dawn Jeffs is hot right now with 2 homers. We are up 6-0 to Rhode Island with Dana Wheeler on the hill.
