BC-US--OBIT-ORAL ROBERTS,0129
URGENT
Evangelist Oral Roberts dies in Calif. at age 91
Eds: APNewsNow.
NEW YORK (AP) - Evangelist Oral Roberts, who rose from tent
revivals to found a multimillion-dollar organization and an
Oklahoma university bearing his name, has died. He was 91.
His spokesman A. Larry Ross said by phone from Carrollton,
Texas, that Roberts died Tuesday of complications from pneumonia in
Newport Beach, Calif. Roberts was hospitalized after a fall on
Saturday. He had survived two heart attacks in the 1990s and a
broken hip in 2006.
Roberts overcame tuberculosis at age 17, and credited that
triumph with leading him to become one of the country's most famous
ministers.
By the 1960s and '70s, the Oklahoma-born Roberts was reaching
millions around the world through broadcasting, publications and
personal appearances. Oral Roberts University, chartered in 1963,
became a Tulsa landmark.

Thanks for heads up. Whether you agreed with his theology or methods, he was certainly arguably one of the top 5 most influential Evangelicals of the 20th Century.

I wonder if his death increases or decreases the chances of the school being renamed? Just thinking out loud.

Certainly, they're not going to scrub the name at a time like this...

My parents attended one of his tent services back in the 50's and went through his healing line. Dad had heart problems and Mom suffered with arthritis. Long story ...short....Dad lived till 1981 and Mom's arthritis subsided considerably. God can work miracles thru one of his servants and I believe Oral Roberts was one of God's servants.

I doubt the university will be looking to scrape the name off the school so close to the founder's passing... but who knows? It may happen eventually.

I agree with Sly Fox in that I did not totally agree with all of the theology or statements Roberts had to offer BUT I respect what he accomplished over his lifetime with God's help. I am glad that it is God who will judge me and not my critics... I have many failings.

I think over the course of the past year the direction of university may have shifted a bit. I am not a fan of the "emergent church" that seems to be popular now... Seeing quite a bit of that.

I lurk around this forum from time to time and root for the Flames since I'm a fan of mid-major hoops (and I like to see another Christian university succeed). Good luck to Coach Layer & Co. this hoops season!

Welcome Golden Eagle to our board, hope you come back more often. I remember ORU with coach Trickery, I think his first name was Ken but I could be mistaken. Back then ORU was running and gunning.

I mean no disrespect, but Roberts was a pretty crazy guy! I really don't know much about him though.

http://www.time.com/time/magazine/artic ... 70,00.html
So far, 1987 has been a checkered and chastening year for the Rev. Oral Roberts, 69. Last January the Tulsa-based TV evangelist announced that if he did not receive $8 million from donors by March 31, God would "call me home." The money was raised, but Roberts' dramatic ultimatum provoked widespread derision. He drew additional gibes by declaring that his wife Evelyn had come to his rescue when the devil visited his bedroom and tried to strangle him. Then, in May, Roberts mailed 1 million packets of "healing" water to followers, advising them to use it to "anoint your billfold" to solve money problems and "anoint your body" to allay physical ills.

A 900-foot-tall Jesus Christ assured Oral Roberts his massive City of Faith project will be built, Roberts says in a fund-raising letter recently brought to light by one of his detractors.

Roberts says in his letter that on May 25th he spoke to Jesus who said "I told you that I would speak to your partners and, through them, I would build it!" Partners is the term Roberts applies to the donors who have given millions to raise the Tulsa hospital, the tallest building in the city.

For the record, I wasn't referring to anything immediate in regard to a name change. But since the school is taking a very different path under the Greens to separate itself from the financial problems of the Roberts family then I thought a CBN-to-Regent type of move might be in order in the not too distant future now that the patriarch is no longer involved.

And Golden Eagle, glad to have you drop back by. I enjoy watching the Eagles succeed as well.

I think a lot of people think of Falwell in the same light. The 9/11 comments didn't help.

No doubt! Falwell stuck his foot in his mouth on many occasion, although telling people God is going to kill you if they don't give $8 million is probably at a different level IMO. Perhaps if someone were to dig far enough, you may find a similar comment by Falwell.

Since you have nothing to do start digging.

I'm sorry, I really didn't mean to offend anyone. I'll keep my Oral Roberts comments to myself, as it probably wasn't a good thing to interject into this discussion anyway.

I can take a hint, I'll try to find something better to do! :D
