Sadly this doesn't come as much of a surprise. The amazing thing is that Richard Roberts saw firsthand what happened during the last round of major scandals in the '80s and it didn't stop him from helping himself to whatever he wanted.

Here's what ran in the Tulsa fishwrap on Sunday ...
Some withholding judgment on ORU

Roberts: He says he pays his family’s expenses.

Tulsans have seen upheaval before but are concerned how it affects students.

Oral Roberts University captured attention for money woes and messages from God long before a lawsuit filed last week alleged illegal political involvement and misspending for the benefit of the university president's family.

But Tulsans said they are waiting for evidence to back up the recent accusations before guessing at the fate of the city's charismatic Christian icon.

I'm reserving judgement on this. If these were federal charges, I'd be more inclined to believe it but this is a civil lawsuit and anybody can accuse anybody else of pretty much anything in a civil trial.

Its not so much the lawsuit but the documentation of the charges that prove most revealing. The info found on the laptop by the student along with all of the other documentation is a very convincing case in the court of public opinion. And since these institutions like ORU and LU rely so much on outside generosity we are especially vulnerable. That's why the Roberts clan should have known better based on what they saw with the PTL & TBN scandals.

I just read the full suit and, yeah, that looks really really really bad. I couldn't help but think, "I hope the Falwell kids don't turn out like this."

Indeed it does sound bad.

Fortunately, nothing I have ever encountered with either of the Falwell families has given me even the slightest reason to worry. There's only so much you can expect over multiple generations, but the current duo in power seem to be solid to the core, just like their father.

Edit: I should also note that this is why it is absolutely essential to have a third party firm conduct full internal audits. Every penny must be accounted for. LU does this. In fact, we're going through a big part of the auditing process right now. It can be a pain, but the peace of mind is worth it.

I don't think they would do this kind of stuff anyway, but to their credit, both JJ and Jonathon were successful entreprenours in their youth, and from what I have heard invested wisely. That, along with legitimate salaries which are commensurate with the responsible jobs they hold I think have put both of them in a financial situation where there is no need or temptation to exploit their position for personal gain. Never say never though, and diligance and accountability are IMHO always a good thing.

OH good grief. GOod Ole' ORU> I don't have much to say good about this place. My sister went there for a year and she hated it. I won't bore you with the other ORU tie in's I have let's just say I grew up in an Independent Pentacostal and AG church. Here are the points that stick in my craw:
1. What happened to the first Mrs Roberts and why did they send us a NEW Bible with his NEW wife in it and ask us to return the "old" one.
2. Whatever happened to that wholde City of Faith thing? Glad to see THAT worked out.
3. Can someone say NAIA, NCAA, NAIA, NCAA?? WOnder why they did that?
4. MY favorite was to always watch re runs of shows b/c the power of God maybe want there to heal someone THAT day, but a day in the future. Sort of like a Healing Virus.
5. They are DIRTY. Financially, morally, administratviely. THey are now experiencing the "goes around" part of what comes around goes around.

Yes, as a matter of fact I DO feel better

Updated: New claims in ORU lawsuit

By APRIL MARCISZEWSKI World Staff Writer

It alleges documents were destroyed and a "sexual deviant" had access to campus.

Three former Oral Roberts University professors made public on Friday what their lawsuit against ORU describes as "the exact packet of information" that they allege got two of them fired and resulted in one's resignation.

Previous versions of their lawsuit contained only a summary of the report, which was at least partially written by Stephanie Cantees, the sister-in-law of ORU President Richard Roberts.

Oral Roberts president to take leave

By JUSTIN JUOZAPAVICIUS
Associated Press Writer

TULSA, Okla. - Oral Roberts University president Richard Roberts has asked the school's board of regents for a leave of absence amid accusations of lavish spending at donors' expense and illegal involvement in a political campaign.

On Wednesday, Roberts, 58, said he would continue in his role as chairman and chief executive of Oral Roberts Ministries.

I'll say it. That "God's timing" line really bugs me. Dude is in the middle of a financial and ethical scandal that could wreck your whole ministry so what does God's timing have to do with anything? It wasn't God's timing that caused the problems in the first place. Is it just me?

Oral Roberts Says Devil Won't Steal ORU

Oct 22, 7:40 PM (ET)

TULSA, Okla. (AP) - Oral Roberts returned to his namesake university Monday and denied the lurid accusations that have threatened to engulf the school, telling students and employees in a chapel service that "the devil is not going to steal ORU."

Making his first visit to Oral Roberts University in three years, Roberts said at the service that his son Richard Roberts, who took a leave of absence as the school's president last week, eventually will return to his position, the Tulsa World reported.

In a word, no. But you can't blame an 89-year-ol man for trying to do whatever he can to salvage what is left of his name.
