Yet another instance of the city resisting any efforts to work with anything tied to LU ...

The politically murky issue of separation of church and state has spilled over into schools, workplaces, institutions and government functions.

The Lynchburg Regional Airport also has found itself caught in the crosshairs of the topic – though the “church” in this case is the Christian private higher-education institution Liberty University.

Because LU has such a great track record fulfilling their City obligations......

In this case it all comes down to the terms of the lease. I think the headline and your commentary is very misleading

This. I don't fly into Lynchburg when coming home. RDU, RIC, ROA or even PHF//ORF will get my business first b/c I have status with Delta. Delta doesn't fly to Lynchburg. Plus my parents will use any excuse to go to any of those places so mom can eat at Carraba's and have dinner with her favorite son :D

Also, I believe LU/City relations are much better now than they have been in the past. Yes, the crosswalk at the annexes and this are little rough patches, but it seems the relationship now is far better than it was 10-20 years ago.

Don't forget the Lake Issue
But generally they are much better than in the past. Paying your bills on time helps with that

I thought the Lake was in Beford County and involved the Virginia DCR more than actual local officials?

There have been a few people who have absolutely been anti-LU over the years (matshark or Atrain could probably elaborate more on that), but Ceasor Johnson seems like the most obvious one in the situations between the school and the city over the years.

I dream of the day that name of city is changed from Lynchburg to Liberty. LU can do a better job running airport than anyone. and other stuff in the city also.

I'm sorry, but does the city have such a great record of being a supporter of LU and business in general along LU's side of town? If so... I missed that one.

The City has not been business friendly to anyone. But back in the day LU made a lot of promises it didn't keep. So add that to the general non friendly business environment and it's not a good recipe

I like the fact that they voted 6-1 in favor of Freedom Aviation. The only issue of having an opportunity for other businesses to come in can be hashed out in the lease agreement. It does help that DY is wel know to the aviation community and gets out and gets involved. If only some of our coaches did that.........but I digress

Haize: Excellent observations on the "coaches".

Every head coach at LU should be very visible in the community. Some I believe intentionally stay hid.

I think the bigger deal is that every single citizen that attended the meeting spoke in favor of Freedom Aviation and against the idea of the city running the show.

Which is why I said the headline and SLY's post were misleading

So apparently you DID miss something :D

I actually appreciate their distinctive differences. Don't forget, it has only been in the last 10 years that LU has really been booming. Yes, my class that entered in 1985 was big, but most went free and just as many only went two years. Liberty has talked and promised quite a bit in the past, and it is only recently that the talk has been substantiated. There is a reason some look at LU with disdain- it isn't about just beliefs, either. I do think LU has gone to great lengths to build bridges into the community and I think the future is bright for relations between the two entities. In regards to the airport, it would be best run by a regional authority. Secondly, I think the current airport manager is like one of those coaches that never meets expectations, but seems to be able to hang around, no matter how poor the performance.

Ph - I am skeptical of the city's support for LU in this case. I guess I just think that they were influenced by the individuals that spoke in favor of LU and the fact that no one spoke in favor of the city taking over.

Only problem I have ever seen with Airport was the parking for the air show a couple years ago. It was a mess. They should have allowed parking on airport grounds, not use shuttle busses entirely.

Something to keep in mind is how small the airport is and how big Freedom Aviation is. Right now they need each other.

No offense but that doesn't make sense. If people spoke in favor of it' then there is some support in the Lynchburg Aviation Community. The fact that not only did the Council vote for it, several were quoted as saying positive things about it. Not sure what there is to be skeptical about.

Too long.
Agreed. He keeps trying to woo United for a connection to Dulles after losing the connection to Atlanta. Problem here is that with Amtrak, the people of Lynchburg already have a good option for going north and the only reason to fly anywhere along the I-95 corridor would be an international connection. CHO has a flight to Laguardia (which is in jeopardy if the perimeter rule is dropped).

Good man. I wish they had service running South as well. Now you have to go to DC to go south.
Try taking it to NYC, Philly or Boston.
