They did that as the result of a lawsuit threat at the time their first album was released. They were never actually Vroomx2. It was just a trick to keep lawyers at bay. By the time their second album came out (while we were in school), they weren't using that any more.

I'm not sure what the final decision was in shutting down The Upper Room, but they ripped off every band who played there. For a venue run out of a church they were by far the most dishonest and greedy when it came to paying bands for shows. They never paid what they promised and it didn't go over well with the bands who were playing there. It's a shame because it was one of the better venues in town at the time.

I remember Third Day playing there a lot in the mid-90's.

hey, my church has an "upper room" but there's no way a concert could be held up there. What church was this at? Now that I think about it, I'm guessing there are many churches that have some place called "the upper room".

Who remembers concerts in the basement at Spanky's? After every song some old lady would jump up on stage and yell at you "DONT TOUCH THE PIPE! IF YOU HANG ON THE PIPE, YOU'LL HAVE TO LEAVE! I WILL RIP YOUR ARM OUT OF ITS SOCKET IF YOU TOUCH THAT PIPE"

Man. I hated that basement. It sounded bad and it smelled bad. Aaaaand they let people smoke in there. I had a winter coat ruined from the combination of bad smells. I could never get them out.

I remember the same lady making threats one time because people were moshing. Except people weren't. I mean, people weren't even moving. It was a totally boring point in the show and nothing was going on. She saw something she didn't like somewhere, I guess, and she was bound and determined to call it moshing. "I'll shut it down! I'll shut the whole thing down right now! You will stop or go home!"

Yeah, I knew about the legal reasons behind going with the name Vroomx2. I realize nobody actually called them that (except maybe Valerie T), but that was their official name until the original Vroom disbanded and/or the name was officially up for grabs.

I didn't know about the shady business practices of The Upper Room, but I experienced some of their crappy management skills. The band I was playing with at the time was set to open for a Christian death metal band (yes, it is a genre, and we were the exact opposite of death metal) as our first gig in the 'burg, but Corpse (the death metal band) backed out, and we got a call the day before (or maybe the day of, I can't remember) telling us that our show was cancelled. It was a shame, because a lot of our friends were excited about out first show and were going to come see us play instead of Circadian Rhythm, who was playing at the Fishbowl that night. We ended up pulling some strings with Circadian Rhythm and played our first gig at the Fishbowl instead as an opener for them. A note was posted on the door of the Upper Room for anyone who might show up to see us there.

I won't mention the name of the band I was in, but the information is probably out there if anyone feels inclined to find it.

Well suffice it to say in MY day there was no such thing as a music scene.....LBC was a CHRISTIAN college back then, not a place for a bunch of godless hootenanny..........

Yeah, big stuff for us was Mark Lowery singing "He's Alive". There were three guys from Russia that had come to then LBC and started a band. They played one night at Super Conference and went a little too much on the electric guitar and caused some consternation. John Rawlings, a pastor and speaker, was very gracious and kind of "covered" for them. LOL. I wasn't there though. I was "working" in the parking lot with the football players directing traffic. :D Even the Gaither Vocal Band could not play on campus back then and had to play at E.C Glass even though Jerry did go to the concert. That was rock n' roll to us starved masses back in the day.

So, I am left to judge by what I heard commercially which pretty much leaves it to DC Talk. I thought "Free At Last" was there best CD, perhaps not the most artistic but it was a seminal CD with a big change in their direction and is still considered one of the all time best CCM cd's.

I still have Robbie Hiner's very first solo album. Well, actually it was with another guy named Steve something but it was not done with the choral and the polyester leisure suits. Man, I wish I was 25 years younger and could go to LU today!

I actually knew a couple of those guys in Ruscha. Shortly after they left campus they moved to Nashville and grew their hair out. They never really did have much commercial success.

Sounds like you and I were there around the same time JJ. I remember when Larry Norman and his band played at EC Glass in the 79/80 school year. Word spread around capus that you would be in deep (fill in this space) if you were caught at this concert. I was never that much af a DC Talk fan, although I did enjoy Kevin's cover of Lonely Moon on the Mark Heard tribute CD.
