Good thinking LU!
That is exactly what the firefighters were talking about on the local news.

I know there had been talk on here awhile back about the school opening up the Village to faculty. Anybody know if that is the case and if so, who to contact?

In case you are wondering, this is not for me but one of my family members who is curious.

All I have heard is that it is being utilized by some grad students, primarily from the School of Law.

i drove in there the other day to see what was going on. it looked like most of the townhouses and homes were occupied, but I didn't see any signs of new construction. it'd be interesting to hear what they are planning on doing with it (more townhouses, regular houses, etc)

This is what the Champion had to say about Liberty Village (now called Liberty Ridge) back in October:
Elizabeth Simms is the realtor that handles Liberty Ridge. There are 26 units total, and prices start from $500 to $1400 a month. The one-bedroom apartments start at $500, and the single-family homes start at $1200 a month. Simms said they are focused on getting married and graduate Liberty students into Liberty Ridge. As of right now, about half of the units are leased, but there are plenty more available. Elizabeth Simms may be contacted at (434) 534-9870 or realtorsimms@aol.com for more information about housing and availability.
(This is also the same edition that has a pic of what the DeMoss fountain will look like).

NewsAdvance wrote:Original builders of Liberty Village to pay $1.3M to settle violations

By Christa Desrets
Published: January 7, 2009

The original builders behind the construction of Liberty Village on Candlers Mountain Road will pay more than $1.3 million to settle alleged violations of the Clean Water Act and of permit restrictions between 2001 and 2003 at the site.

The U.S. Department of Justice and the Environmental Protection Agency announced Wednesday that five defendants will pay a $300,000 penalty and fund more than $1 million in stream and wetlands restoration work.

The justice department filed the settlement Wednesday on behalf of the EPA as part of a consent decree in the Western District of Virginia.

The defendants — who are not related to the property’s current owner, a subsidiary of Liberty University — are listed in a Department of Justice news release as Savoy Senior Housing Corporation, Savoy Liberty Village LLC, SDB Construction Inc., Best G.C. Inc. and Acres of Virginia Inc.

About $250,000 of the settlement will go toward on-site “restoration of one stream, restoration and enhancement of four ponds, installation of plantings, and eradication of invasive species in certain areas,” according to the news release.

a lot of people were waiting for homes to be built and lost their money. What makes the EPA think they'll ever get a dime from these guys?

They have funds for this type of thing. They may never recover 100% of their money back but they are protected by the state (I'm not sure what org it is but someone) I know the same thing happened to my sister and they were able to get about 70% of their money back. My uncle serves on the board (and no that's not why she got her money back!)

There's your answer. They won't get it from those guys. They'll get it from you.

Why did'nt the school ever try to use this land for "off campus housing"? I have been up there a few times and I really wish they would have made a campus golf course up there. Since they did not do that then the "off campus housing" seems to be the next thing that makes since for the University.

purely speculation, but i have heard talk of the possibility of an 18-hole course in the liberty village area.

Now THAT would be cool. I thought at one point we were supposed to have something like that over where East Campus is now.

A golf course, if done right, would be great for the university AND the golf team. And by right, it would mean forking over some $$ to have a name architect (perhaps a Christian PGA Pro who also designs) involved. If it is not done right...or RUN RIGHT...then it would be flushing money down the toilet. The more I think of it...I think of a school like Methodist Univ in NC...which has a Golf Management Program...a course on campus...and arguably the top D3 golf school for men and women in the country. Certainly, LU can do something like that, too. Add a women's golf team, as well. This thing, if true, would be a boon to both ACADEMICS and ATHLETICS!.
