I know a lot of the guys are the same, but Ghost of a Fallen Age is a huge step backwards as far as musicianship goes....just nothing creative.....
well, ghost of a fallen age does have former members of Everything Falls Together...but i like them, they sound good to me.

yeah....EFT....never got into them either....but I am a very, very, very critical person and am very hard to please when it comes to music....which I think is a good thing....

Frankly I'd rather be a little easier to please. It would make my life in general more pleasant.

I suppose...but when you have friends that are musicians and they know you are hard to please it makes your opinion that much more important...because if you like it, it must be good....at least this is what I have been told....

I have learned to tune out most of todays crap music anyways

I'm easily pleased but I'm also very critical. Try to make sense out of that.

Brentwood was a really good band. My buddy's band played with them alot over in Boone, got a couple of their songs on Mp3 as well, same with Beloved. Beloved was on the top of the totum pole of NC scene

Do you still have some of the Brentwood stuff? I lost all of mine. I used to love them.

Who was your friend? Chances are I've heard of em and possibly met them.

One of the guys from Beloved is now a substitute teacher, or he was two years ago.

Greensboro's got a couple good ones right now.

Well...there weren't any bands on campus back in my day at LBC so I'll list my favorite local band from right here in Richmond, VA.
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fu ... =167877054 give a listen to all the tunes and then try she's not cryin' anymore and no adultry blooze over at http://www.funender.com/music/bands/7526/
I first met Harry Gore at a Daniel Amos / Randy Stonehill show in VA Beach in April of 82. We've been good friends since. I would go see his band, "The Good Guys" every time I had the chance. They were sort of a combination of the Busboys meets Badbrains meets Living Color (they were before them, although Harry has shared the stage with Vernon Reid many a time. They played all up and down the east coast college circuit and they could play with anyone. It wasn't a stretch for them to open for Blackflag one night and then Los Lobos the next. Harry is a musical legend around here

Another favorite of mine was House of Freaks http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Freaks
I was truly saddened when Bryan and his family were murdered a few years back. He was also a musical hero of mine.

Throws Like a Girl - Vroom

I'm listening to it now for the first time in a while and it is simply awesome. To me it is my 4 years of college. Scorcho's got my back.
Scorcho does, indeed, have your back.

I could go on and on and on about Vroom. I am their number one fan, and always will be. I can tell you way more about that album than you'd probably care to know, and everything following it. It's so so good. LU alum John Painter (of "Fleming and John" fame) recorded it in Nashville when we were all at LU. They did it in about a week.

Seriously, I could go on and on. That album is epic. It is the soundtrack of college for me. It was so much bigger than the little indie album it was supposed to be. When they started playing the bigger clubs in Philly and Boston opening for major label bands, we all thought they were going to get their big break. Unfortunately that didn't happen for a few reasons, but a lack of talent is not one of them. John, Tim, Nate and Ron are all great guys, too. They let me tag along to shows more than a few times.

I'm also proud to say that I recorded their fourth and final album, "Rosebud". It took Tim and I a long time to get it done because our studio was brand new and we were also new to recording. It came out with a pretty unique sound as a result.

But yes. "...throws like a girl" is most definitely the best album that came directly out of LU. I can't give dcT a nod because they didn't record Jesus Freak while they were in school. :) I'm limiting my choices to the works that were produced while people were in college.

All of Vroom's music is available to download for free except for the "...throws like a girl" album, which is available for purchase at decapolis.com. You can download the rest here: http://www.vroomrock.com/mp3/ (FYI, the production/recording of the "A Five Song Demonstration" album really sucks. The band and everyone else in the world is aware of this.)

Also, their 1998 album "Things Not to Do" is by far the best album to come out of LCA! It's pop-punk, sure, but they showed a flare for harmony and song writing that few 17/18 year olds ever apply to whatever their generation's flavor of the day is. And really, how many bands have written great albums at LCA and LU? If you're into pop-punk I dare you to download that album and not listen to it twice while singing along the second time. Best sing along album ever.

I saw that Circadian Rhythm was mentioned in passing. They weren't my favorite, but it's worth noting that their bassist Paul Barber has gone on to do some pretty successful production work. Most recently he produced Ben Kweller's cover of the Smashing Pumpkins tune "Today" for the promotion of the new Pumpkins album that Myspace is doing. You can hear it here: http://www.myspace.com/benkweller

Dan and Will from CR were on my hall my sophomore year. They were good guys until they started a band.

I had classes with John Painter back in the day. He was the bass guitarist for the TRBC Orchestra back in the Late '80s (my roommate was the standup bassist). He used to do a bunch of work with dcTalk once upon a time.

Come on, Scorcho. Limiting bands to the stuff they produce between classes seems rather restricting. BTW Anthony Evans did a decent album as well (even though its not the taste of most of you guys on here).

Yeh the two Brentwood songs are catch me when I fall and until 2 A.M. last night Their drummer used to play some for my buddy's band Juvenile Actions. You probably know them since they played over in the Boone/ASU area alot. Couple of them were from Winston and Josh (the guitarr player) was from my hometown down here. They were alright though. Nothing to write home about.

This is way out of my area(s) of expertise, but would Bev Lowry have the top selling faculty CD/album/record/8-track?

E-mail me those two songs when you get a chance. They were the two I had. What was Josh's last name? Robbie (the drummer) played with everybody. That ASU scene was flat out awesome during that time.

He and his wife, Fleming, went on to some commercial success. They had a hit with their single "Ugly Girl" and even played it on Conan. John has had even greater success as a producer and session player. He can play just about any instrument well. His most popular work has been with Ben Folds and William Shatner. Shatner may sound like a joke, but his last album was a Ben Folds written and produced work that was phenomenal. John has regularly played out live with Ben, including some dates when Ben played backing Shatner.

He also advised Tim Vroom and I on all of the equipment we purchased when we opened our studio. He's an A+ standup guy in my book.

I'm going to go with Vroom on this one as well. They were an excellent live band. Throws like a girl doesn't get much play from me currently but I might take it for another spin. Kerry Knight was also great live. I have his cd and it's decent but nothing memorable. He was a very talented guy though. His band won the battle of the bands that LU put on in Schilling back around 2001 or so.

BTW, here's the video of Vroom's last show from October 2005 at the Drowsy Poet: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid ... searchfeed

It's an hour long and crappy quality but it is what it is.

That show at the Drowsy was pretty funny. They practiced once before the show and shortened most of the songs. John also forgot some lyrics. It still wasn't bad considering they hadn't played together for three years.

sort of off topic...if the Byrds did a Christmas song, it would sound like God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen over here

LU Had a burgeoning music scene about 10 years ago. We had bands like Vroom (of course, but they went by VROOMx2 back then), Circadian Rhythm, Peculiar People, Amy King, Blank Page, Coco B. Where?, Eye Circle, Image, The Falwells, Brave Little Toaster, Don P. & CZ Smooth and others. There were at least two or three decent main venues for these local bands to play, and it seems like there was a show or two almost every weekend. There was the annual Greenstone music festival (although it wasn't done very well... bands took up too much time and ended up pushing other set times back by two hours or more).

There's still a music scene here, but it seems a lot more sparse than it was back then. We have bands like Bosc, Hot Like Cajun and a few others that put out some quality music, but almost no venues apart from a couple of coffee shops. I would love to see some more club-like venues pop up (where did The Upper Room and The Fishbowl go?).

To keep my reply on topic, I'm going to go with Jesus Freak and Supernatural by dcTalk as my bests. I know I sound like a sellout now after mentioning all those indie bands, but those were phenomenal albums.
