I went to Q as well. I had actually seen them on TV. I think BBQ Pitmasters maybe. It was pretty pricey but it was pretty good. I don't want to put them down or anything but I guess I just had super high expectations. Dickey's is just ok. Their brisket is pretty good. The pork is nothing special. Their sausages are excellent. All in all, kind of what you'd expect from a chain. Just too expensive to justify any other day than Sunday when the kids are a free ride.

I went to this one place called Old Glory over in the Georgetown section of DC some years ago and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'll have to see about checking out Red Hot and Blue next time I'm up that way though

Too bad Red Hot and Blue doesn't take the location.

I stated back years ago when Dickeys opened originally that the chain was a poor representation of Texas barbecue. Mediocre 'cue at premium pricing is never a recipe for success.

Red, Hot & Blue has always been a fairly solid chain for Memphis-style. They have basically pulled out of Texas over the past decade or so. But we ate at the one in Williamsburg back in October during our family trip. It is rather pricey but the food was reasonably solid for a chain. I suspect the first legitimate Texas bbq chain that could hit the east coast will be Rudy's. They have a very specific set-up at all their locations and they keep inching further and further out. Rudy's is not the best bbq in the world, but it is a big step up from Dickeys or even Pok-E-Joes (not that I am hating on the latter).

I've always wanted to stop there. What do you suggest when ordering?

Everything!
The ribs first and foremost. A full rack is a FULL rack. As for sides the Mac and Cheese is the best around. My wife makes award winning Mac and Cheese and she gives the nod to theirs.
If you have always wanted to stop do it today or tomorrow. Don't delay. You OWE it to yourself to taste their savory BBQ awesomeness !

I think they are only open Thursday, Friday and Saturdays. If you doubt their yummieness from me ask Smoothie, I made him a believer!

Thank you for affirming Central Texas barbecue's greatness. I still have yet to make it to that Austin spot but I plan to upon my next visit. But there is no shortage of killer smokehouse joints in the ATX.

I've regularly eaten at that entire list and dozens more except Franklins. That will have to change. For the record, the original Salt Lick remains number one for me. I always request plenty of burnt ends and leave smiling. Much of the best barbecue in Central Texas is in the nearby towns of Taylor, Lockhart & Llano. But they rarely get much tourist traffic away from Austin.

Agree on best BBQ is mostly outside Austin as listed but have not been to Franklins yet either. Not a big Salt Lick fan as they sauced it without asking and I HATE their sauce.

I drove by Franklins on Saturday and even in a driving rain, the line snaked all the way around the building. But we rolled down the windows and parked along the curb for a few minutes and enjoyed the aromas. We had to "settle" for Freebirds as we hustled home to Houston.
