Crossroads Colonnade developers cleared the first public hurdle as Campbell County planning commissioners unanimously voted to recommend rezoning more than 200 acres of land.
The rezoning request will go before the Board of Supervisors in a public hearing Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. in Rustburg.
If approved, the land currently owned by Liberty University and Thomas Road Baptist Church will be a mix of residential and commercial zoning in anticipation of a 220-acre mixed-use development. The project may include up to 900,000 square feet of retail space, most of which is in Campbell County, said Lee Beaumont, Liberty University’s director of auxiliary services. About 150 acres will be for retail.
In comparison, Wards Crossing West is about 31 acres, including parking and open space.
The Crossroads Colonnade project is comparable in scope to Lakeside Centre - a 200-acre retail development planned for the intersection of U.S. 501 and Lakeside Drive.

Campbell County supervisors may vote on a request to rezone almost 200 acres near Liberty University after a public hearing scheduled Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in Rustburg.
Second, if any buildings' backs or sides face U.S. 460, those faces will use materials and colors consistent with the buildings' fronts. The measure is an effort to improve the retail center's appearance from U.S. 460, considered a major gateway into Lynchburg.
