NewsAdvance wrote:Four Lynchburg-area colleges make U.S. News & World Report ranking

Four Lynchburg-area colleges are listed in the U.S. News & World Report’s 2009 college rankings.

The latest edition hits newsstands this week. Rankings were published Friday on the magazine’s Web site.

Lynchburg College climbed 10 spots, and Randolph College dipped 27 in their respective categories. Sweet Briar College fell one spot.

Here’s how Lynchburg-area schools fared:

- Liberty University was one of only three colleges profiled nationwide in the 2007 edition, which also was the first year the college ranked, as No. 109 in the southern region of master’s universities. Last year, the college was unranked in the bottom tier of the same category, where it remains this year.

Why do these rankings even matter? It seems to me they're based off of how other schools view you, the selection and retention rates, and not so much on the success of graduates. For example, you get the same type of education at school A as school B. School A is smaller and a lot more selective, whereas school B is larger and has lower standards for admittance, therefore also have more dropouts. School A will be ranked higher, but that doesn't mean that they produced a better graduate than school B.

Lynchburg College climbed 10 spots this year to No. 33 in the southern region of master’s universities. In the 2007 edition, in was No. 44, and last year was No. 43.
Apparently people like LC then :)

You've got to love the locals who still think Liberty has destroyed the city:
for your info..this city has been chartered for more than 300 years ,,and we were doing just fine until this TAX exempt MONSTER came along to drive up our taxes to pay for their leaching socialist butts!!and all those things you speak of have laed to an ecological diaster for lynchburg,,clear cut mountains ,,clear cutting land,,destroying wetlands,,and you dont pay for the roads you get us to in higher taxes and you increase taxes to the state when you go to richmond to get the state to build your ramps and now tunnel,,you take ,take ,take ,,and you convence your self that its all us,,were is my HOOTERS,,BARS,NIGHTCLUBS..TO heck w/your low wage stores w/nothing,,your outer state cars that dont help w/roads cause you by-pass DMV,,and i can go on and on etc,,but save me the time .take a economic class at l/u and be sure to read about the eco effects on the overall population because you dont pay taxes,,yet your populations requires larger hospitals..more cops/emt/fire/jails/courts,,higher ins. rates,,its call leaching aka sap suckers,,
He forgot about how much tax dollars the 20+ hotels, and 100+ businesses have brought into the Lynchburg budget that would never have been here without Liberty.

By the way, aren't all schools tax exempt?

I stopped reading his rant after two lines because obviously he's never taken a single grammar class in his entire life.

no, all are not although I think most are. Even though you are a school, you still have to meet a lot of requirements to keep the tax exempt status

But all the colleges in the Lynchburg area are private, except for CVCC.
