1900 12th St.: Built between 1918 and 1919, this site is perhaps best known as the defunct Fort Hill Plant of the Craddock-Terry Shoe Corporation. It’s currently owned by Liberty University, which uses the facility for storage.
A cluster of properties in the Kemper Street area is pursuing designation as a state and national historic district.
The request goes to a public hearing tonight. If approved, it would mark the first time in local history a Lynchburg neighborhood is recognized primarily for its industrial significance.
The desired designation, which has been given the name Kemper Street Industrial Historic District, highlights a former manufacturing center.
A total of five sites spanning about 17 acres are encompassed, including the former Craddock-Terry Shoe Corporation factory. The oldest parts of each building date back to between 1918 and 1936.
Their modern-day owners include Liberty University, Charlottesville developer Oliver Kuttner and The Landmark Group, the North Carolina company behind the City Market Lofts project in downtown.
