From Knucklehead's Crew:
t's under contract and the new developer has major plans.Liberty University says they've sold The Plaza to a Virginia developer. They can't release details because it's under contract, but they tell us it sold for more than 11.7 million dollars. The Plaza was donated to Liberty several months ago by the shopping center's previous owner.

According to JDUB's calculations, LU made a profit on this. :P

britches is a word that is southern for pants or shorts. just like you northern folk call them sneakers instead of tennis shoes. what we lack in eloquincy we make up for in hospitality. i'll put that in simpler terms... we are nicer than you are.

I'm not a logistics expert, so I'm probably wrong, but if Carmike and the developers worked together, couldn't they retro-fit the existing theaters with stadium-style seating and maybe add on/put in a few more screens? I'm just wondering what might happen there because of the new DLP tech they recently put in.

I guess they could just construct a new building and move the projectors over when it's complete.

It's just not the location these new million dollar theaters are looking for...the prime location is now over where Ross and Old Navy is

a nicely done and creative development could draw the 03 crowd and maybe some of the mad. heights crowd. a good developer is a visionary. i hope it will be a success.

They must have changed their tune recently, since a theater was supposedly going into Lakeside Centre, right off 221, before the financier died.

Also, Wards Crossing would be a horrible location for a movie theater. It's congested enough as it is. If you put a nice theater anywhere in Lynchburg, people will show up, and other businesses will follow. If you build it, they will come.

Did that even really happen? I know somebody here said that, but that was the last I heard of that.

Yes, the project was in the works (contractors on-site, land being cleared) and then the financial backer died. There's still the occasional contractor sighting (people with their SUVs and PDAs and clipboards), but not a lot of action in that area.

I've heard of two...one over in the Old Navy area (maybe even across the highway if that mall ever takes place) and one in your area as well....Lynchburg can handle 2 nice places....b/c once they open I promise you these other 2 (not the dollar) will be out in a year

What makes you think it won't? It seems like it was approved by everybody and was now an enevitability.

That could work. What we need is for Regal or Consolidated to step up and run Carmike out of town.

It looks like the school will be holding on to the Plaza longer than anticipated ...
Liberty officials: Plaza plans nixed

By Alicia Petska
Published: June 4, 2008

The tentative sale of The Plaza has officially been called off, according to Liberty University officials.

Financing obstacles were cited as the cause of the deal’s collapse. LU is moving on and working to secure new tenants for the midtown shopping center, Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. said Wednesday.

“The good news has always been this renewed interest we’ve been seeing from tenants,” Falwell said. “It’s the tenants coming in and renovating the property and bringing in customers that’s good for the city. Whether or not we sell it is just a financial decision that doesn’t really impact anybody else.”

LU remains interested in selling, but not in the near future, he added. By holding onto the development and increasing its occupancy, the school expects it could as much as double its value.

Bulldoze it and sell the land. I'd guess they could get $200-$300K per acre.
