FAU fires AD Craig Angelos, who had a hand in shaping school's football expansion

BOCA RATON — Florida Atlantic Athletic Director Craig Angelos, who oversaw the football program's move to Division I-A, had a hand in the completion of an on-campus football stadium and led the search to name the school's second-ever football coach, was let go Wednesday.

Angelos informed his staff at a meeting after being told by university president Mary Jane Saunders that his contract would not be renewed.

Saunders declined to comment but issued a statement thanking Angelos for his service and saying a search for the new athletic director will begin immediately.

Here is how Angelos saw their situation with MWCUSA less than a week ago ...

FAU Athletic Director Craig Angelos said the Owls had talked to C-USA representatives during the past couple years, but there hasn't been any contact in about a month.

“We haven't had any discussions since their merger,” Angelos said.

That doesn't mean Angelos doesn't expect to talk about inclusion in the new mega conference that has yet to be given a formal name.

“I know that they are interested in expanding into Florida,” he said. “I'm sure we'll have some type of discussion.”
