No, they will not get the death penalty. The NCAA saw the damage that did to SMU and will never levy that significant of a punishment ever again. But frankly, Miami deserves a death penalty more than any team since the Pony Express.

But they will get severe sanctions that will render them insignificant for year to come.

I think I know this story better than the Yahoo guys. Been in the car all day and heard about every angle of the story imaginable.

They wont get the death penalty but boy this scares me for the changes that might take place in the NCAA because of this. I think we're starting to accept this as a society so rather than continuing to fight it they may just figure out a way to start getting these players some money....for whatever reason they dont seem to understand if you give a player a dollar they will want 2.

It has to be the death penalty. Unfortunately, the NCAA doesn't have the backbone to do it. The only way to stop it from happening again is to make an example out of those who continue to illegally funnel money to it's players.

Combine this thread with the student loans thread.

Sick of this argument that the NCAA is taking kids for a ride by not paying them and the NCAA pocketing all the money. Isn't the goal of a student athlete to graduate with a degree? Isn't that payment enough?

Ok, time to rant... The whole NCAA, Professional sports crap that is going on is driving me crazy. Here we go -

Miami - Let it be. Are we going to dig into all the issues like this at every school and go back 20 years? It's a waste of time, money and life. The NCAA missed it - oh well. Let's try and implement a better, more realistic system. Shouldn't penalize the current players and the current coach, who are trying to run a clean, legitimate program.

Pay players - Come on here - you CANNOT pay players - that is completely out of the question. They get a free degree, the ability to be involved in something exciting, and some get access to great coaching to help them get to the next level. This discussion is ludicrous, because you would have to pay all teams, all genders - you do the math... (Not happening) Do I care if they get free tattoos, free meals and sell their stuff (as long as they have been given these items)? NO - so be it.

Colleges SHOULD increase their living expenses to the players across the board (players that are on full rides and not aloud to work) - I think there are some things that can't happen. I'm fine with the schools increasing the stipend they get for meals, entertainment, etc... As long as every school has the ability to give the same amount - go for it. Only gets this during season and then aloud to work during off-season.

Rules - The rules need to be fixed. There are way to many stupid rules right now when it comes to recruiting or coaching. If someone needs a ride - a coach should be able to do so. If he wants to take his team out to dinner - he should be able to do so. If a player needs some groceries to survive - a friend of the program should be able to give him some. If a kid is going to a particular college because they are getting $80 worth of groceries every week - more power to them, but they aren't. If the kids phone is getting blown up by coaches texting or calling - isn't it great to be loved... OR here's an idea - turn off your phone or let it be known that you will eliminate schools that contact you to much. Who cares how many times a coach comes and watches a kid play and talk with him just like a normal fan - Most would be eating that up.

Penalties - There will be colleges that break the rules and players that break the rules. If they catch them/him during his career - suspend him/dismiss him - whatever. If it's determined that it was serious enough - then fine the school? Money talks! Most the rule breakers make good money from Bowl games and Tournament games - take that money back. I guarantee the colleges would oversee their programs much tighter if they know it would affect their wallet.

Pryor - Give me a break. Just put him in the Supplemental Draft and why stop him from playing until week 6? HE SUCKS and won't play anyway. The whole argument that he should have been in the draft and he's being penalized for missing it - doesn't hold water - that is what the supplemental draft is all about... Why wouldn't all the players in it get suspended?

If the NCAA wants to dig into every college - they will find past issues at EVERY school.

**end rant**

anybody else just not care at all about this? i don't. players regardless of what rules are levied are going to get 500 dollar handshakes, free meals, and whatever else boosters and the community wants.

its time to stop some of these silly regulations that make only make the ncaa look silly when they come down on them.

kids that are able to market themselves to companies and sell their own property, whatever go forit. if i'm in the music department and i perform in the band, i have every right to go and create a cd and market it.

Incorrect, they levied the death penalty on a D2 and D3 team (although not football) since 2000...

Incorrect. Not all players will have to be payed for all sports of both genders. Allow players to capitalize on their name and image in the free market. School won't have to pay the players anything. If a person isn't capable of getting sponsorships and whatnot, they don't get anything more than what the school is allowed to give them. And full scholarship players can work, they aren't prohibited...

This is why the NCAA is such a joke. You mean to tell me that a TENNIS team and whatever the other sport was were the ONLY one's that has deserved the death penalty? NCAA makes rules up as they go (like the NFL is doing now) and they only make rules for what is convenient...I promise you that you'll never see another major program get the death penalty. Business is business and the NCAA is all about the bottom dollar....and even Miami means a lot of money for them (regardless of how good they are).

NCAA president Mark Emmert says he's willing to back up his tough talk on punishing rule-breakers -- even using the "death penalty" as a deterrent.

With salacious allegations swirling around Miami's football program, and one week after Emmert joined with university presidents to discuss toughening sanctions against cheating schools, the NCAA's leader said he believed the infractions committee should make the harshest penalty an option.

Just like MLB was going to "Possibly suspend A-Rod" for the poker deal. Scare tactics and nothing more... guaranteed.
