Former Major League pitcher Jim Bibby dies at 65
By Chris Morris
Published: February 16, 2010
Jim Bibby, a longtime Madison Heights resident and former Major League Baseball player, died Tuesday night at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was 65...Bibby’s Major League career began in 1972 with the St. Louis Cardinals. Between then and when he retired in 1984, he played for the Texas Rangers, Cleveland Indians and Pittsburgh Pirates.

He was a member of the Pirates team that won the 1979 World Series and, when he was with Texas, he pitched a no-hitter against Oakland in 1973. After leaving the pros, Bibby served as pitching coach with the Lynchburg Mets, Red Sox and Hillcats for 15 years.

Wondering if HMO has any stories about the late, great Jim Bibby.

Some of my earliest memories of him were when he was pitching for the Tribe and I used to watch him on WUAB. Bibby could deal.

As a former Pittsburgh resident and Pirate fan, I was thrilled to meet Jim about 10 years ago while going to physical therapy to rehab from a shattered tibia (motorcycle accident). Jim had just had a knee joint replacement, and we were working out on a lot of the same machines. I saw him once or twice a week for a couple of months. A very nice, down to earth man.

Sad day for the Hillcats family. He always tipped as well, and was a genuinely great guy.
