but aside from that, malkin is twice the hockey player crosby will ever be. garbage goals do not make you one of the greatest in the world. skill, toughness, grit, and athleticism make you a great hockey player. not whining and pretending you can grow a beard.

Brandon Webb and Peyton Manning are debatable, and Walter Johnson is a tough call, too, but eh, not bad.

If you are talking individual sports, you shouldn't say who is the best athlete because for certain sports you don't have to be, necessarily, a great athlete to be on the all time greats. There are plenty of examples in baseball. We should just be saying who was the greatest player in each individual sport. If we are going to have the discussion about the greatest athletes, to me, you just have to throw out certain sports. Because to me, to be the greatest athlete of all time you need strenght, power and speed. I think you can put Muhammed Ali in that discussion.

For the Soccer aspect. The best active player in the world would be either Christiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi. Personally i like Messi more because 1) Ronaldo whines tall the time like he does nothing wrong and 2) His team got beat down on the soccer world's largest club (team) stage by Messi's (and Ronaldo's team was the clear favorite to boot). And the best of all time is very hard to tell. I'd with a toss up between Pele, Maradonna, Ronaldo (The Brazilian not Christiano)

BASKETBALL: Earvin 'Magic' Johnson - simply for playing all five spots and revolutional as a PG.

BASEBALL: Hank Aaron - look at the average along with all the other numbers besides HR's. Sick.

HOCKEY: Hands down Gretzky, although Crosby could rank up there if he stays healthy.

SOCCER: Pele

FOOTBALL: Johnny Unitas - revolutionized the QB position and game at the same time.

BASEBALL: Pujols, but Longoria will catch and surpass him in the next year or two.
