Have some friends there and they said a huge part was Alavarez refusing to increase assistant pay to a competitive level. Also looks like Alvarez is going to once again coach the bowl game and pay himself another $100k+ in the process.

Not sure. I believe he felt really confident that Michigan would have hired Cowherd's guy by last weekend. He hasn't mentioned anything about it recently, except a Bill Belichik joke. I suspect that means the deal fell through or he was just trolling Michigan fans.

He played at and coached at Air Force. He's a service academy guy through and through.

It should also be noted that VMI is slightly different than Air Force, Army, Navy...etc. At VMI, even though you have to participate in ROTC, you are not tied to the military upon graduation.

I saw that later...he knows the environ he is going to be selling kids to to a degree.

I'm interested to see how he does offense there because they never really seemed like a squad who can run a pro-style or West Coast style offense.

Another difference I believe between VMI, the Citadel and the US service academies is that cadets and midshipmen at the service academies are paid a monthly salary for attending.

How much pay does a cadet receive?
A first-year cadet earns more than $900 a month, and the amount increases each year.. A portion of that cadet pay is deposited into a personal checking account. Another portion of cadet pay is deposited to a "Cadet Account" that is used to help a cadet pay for expenses such as uniforms, books, a computer, activity fees, etc. Each cadet pays a standard amount for laundry, dry cleaning, haircuts, tailoring services and shoe repair. A cadet's gross salary is subject to federal and state withholding taxes and Social Security deductions.

Two key names that are near the top of Michigan's long list of prospects: Jim Mora and Dan Mullen.

Also, I read that coaches are saying that Joe Moglia at Coastal would be a great hire at UM. I guess that would be a little like OSU hiring Tressel?

Michigan is not the destination job that it was a decade ago. Jim Mora is not going to leave Sunny California for Big blue. and Dan Mullen is not leaving the SEC.

Was just listening to Colin and he said that the name he's hearing is NFL. He also said that you'll know who it is during NFL's black Monday. I think that would rule out Payton since NO is still in playoff contention. I'm wondering if he's hinting towards Rex Ryan, which at the very least, would be an interesting hire.
