ODU football closing in on necessary endowment
By JIM DUCIBELLA, The Virginian-Pilot
© January 24, 2007 | Last updated 9:53 PM Jan. 23

NORFOLK - Old Dominion University is closing in on the $8 million endowment set by the school's Board of Trustees as a prerequisite for resurrecting the football program in 2009.

Last spring, during a pep rally at Foreman Field to officially announce that football was returning after a 70-year absence, university officials said between $5-6 million had been raised by that time. Tuesday, ODU vice president for Development and Alumni Relations Alonzo Brandon said "we don't see" $8 million "as any sort of problem."

"We're working hard on it," Brandon said. "We have had several dinners recently with supporters who we feel strongly will donate to the $8 million cause."

As the fundraising continues, Brandon said the university is focusing on establishing a statewide network of support that would result in annual contributions of $1 million or more to the football program. As part of that effort, the ODU Intercollegiate Foundation - better known as the Big Blue Club - is forming chapters on the Peninsula, in Richmond, Northern Virginia, Lynchburg, and in North Carolina, among other locales.

"The network is a major point of emphasis," Brandon said.

Meanwhile, ODU athletic director Jim Jarrett said this week that after the expected hiring of a head coach in February, an immediate priority will be adding two assistant coaches. He said the coaches will begin to establish relationships with high school coaches, recruit players and promote the program to the public.

"Recruiting for the 2008 high school graduating class is beginning now," Jarrett said. "Our goal is to have a staff of three that will immediately recruit the first class and get out in the community and begin selling the program. A major part of that is to... develop relationships throughout the state, obviously concentrating on Hampton Roads."

ODU received about 80 applications for the head-coaching position. Their experience level ranged from NFL to high school and prep school. Jarrett refused to say how many candidates are still being considered or when the process will enter its final stage.

Jarrett said former ACC coaches-turned-consultants George Welsh and Dick Sheridan had not been used to "filter" applicants, but had recommended a couple of candidates for consideration.

"We haven't used them to say, 'Here's A, B, C, D; what do you think?' " Jarrett said. "But I'm not saying that we won't do that before it's over."

Asked if getting a coach with previous experience at the I-AA level remained a high priority, Jarrett answered, "Absolutely."

The new coach will have input on every football-related decision ODU makes, including what type of grass or artificial surface to use at Foreman Field. Drawings for the remodeled stadium, which will seat approximately 20,000, are expected to arrive shortly after the new coach is named and will be released to the public soon thereafter.

As for scheduling, Jarrett re-emphasized that ODU would not compete for the CAA championship until 2011. The Monarchs' 2009 schedule will include games against teams from the CAA, other I-AA schools that don't offer scholarships - the Ivy League and Patriot League, for example - and "two or three games that will be reflective of the fact that we will have had only two recruiting classes."

judging from AD jarrett's comments in the last paragraph, do not look for an ODU/LU matchup!

Okay, I'll bite...I would settle for inclusion to the CAA, whether that was all Virginia, all Virginia/Delaware, or all Virginia/Delaware/North Carolina.

(A long shot, I know as discussed ad nauseam elsewhere, but a shot nonetheless. Plus Medic would be disappointed after coming back from an emergency run with no reply to the bait post.)

After being spurned by the SoCon, some of CCU's guys are suggesting they start lobbying the CAA for admission.

seems like a wierd fit to ME, but their point (taken right from our previous discussions here) was that the league may well soon grow so large that it splits. Then, as the theory goes- "they" would add several teams (LU/CCU) and start a new league.

I have trouble seeing all the VA teams traveling that far when the majority of the league is geographically pretty well centrally located as it is.

hmmmm.

Ok, so lets begin postulating (thats theorizing) what this new conference will look like. I guess I'll go first:
LU
ODU
W&M
Richmond
Towson
JMU
VMI
Deleware
Elon

I know, its not gonna happen (especially that last one), but geographically it makes sense, right?

The thing is, Coastal actually has a chance of getting into the SoCon.

The VaCon has as much chance as me dating Miss Virginia.

Bingo. CAA just expanded, and they seem pretty content with what they got.

LU missed the boat. Our only hope for a better conference is bolstering the status of the one we're in now. And of course, the Big South Commish's idea for doing that is... finding D-2 schools.

I think the Big South should make it top priority to add East Tennessee State in 2010.

Otherwise, the league will continue to be a bottom feeder of 1-AA & a stepping stone for Division II teams.

There's just not to many candidates to court right now...
OLD DOMINION (CAA)
GEORGIA STATE, if they add FB (probably CAA)
CAMPBELL (Pioneer)
UNC-PEMBROKE (Pioneer)
SAVANNAH STATE (that team just sucks, plain & simple)

UNC-Pembroke is D2.
Also, despite the fact that they played football as recently as '03, if ETSU were to bring football back in 2010, they would probably be treated the same as any startup program by the NCAA in that they wouldn't be eligible for postseason or anything else until 2012 at the very earliest.

Yeah, I forgot about UNC-P being a D-II. You're right.

I am pretty sure that I heard where ETSU would be playoff eleigible in 2010 though.

My question is...since PC won't be eligible until what..2011 (?), how's the Big South gonna assure its members that we'll be an auto-bid conference in the future? Even if we have six teams that are eligible for the post-season, doesn't the NCAA have to approve if we're an auto-bid league?

I do believe the Big South needs to expand. Unlike some, I have no problem with PC. They're a team with a strong history/tradition. I can actually see them being successful in a few years. Personally, this fan would like to see ESTU added, with maybe one more team. The question is, who would they consider adding?

The NCAA does decide which auto-eligible leagues get the bids. I am fairly confident that if we were eleigble, we would get theo auto bid over the MEAC or OVC. But until we get in position where we have have six full Division I member schools for a couple of years we'll never know.

As for Pembroke, they apparently have designs on FCS membership when they started up the program. But is this really where we want to take the league?

I'm of the opinion that we should try to welcome in ETSU right now regardless of the football scenario. If we wait until they get the football program off the ground it may be too late. The SoCon guys all seem to think the Bucs are returning to them even though it was an ugly split a few years back.

As for targets, I'm of the opinion we should be primarily focusing on SoCon & MEAC members. We should be putting a fullcourt press on Hampton, NC A&T, SC State, The Citadel and Elon. I know it sounds crazy, but these schools would make the most sense for the growth of the Big South in the long run.

What really hurt us was when Elon bolted for the Southern conference as soon as VMI felt to join the Big South. Had Elon stayed, I think the Big South would have been bowl eligible by now.

Unfortunately, the Big South can't assure its members that they will get an autobid b/c the autobids are not automatically handed to the conference even if it's eligible. It's an interesting situation right now b/c there are 16 slots in the football playoffs and 8 autobid conferences. NCAA rules also state (somebody correct me if I'm wrong) that no more than half of any playoff field can consist of autobids. Should the Big South become eligible for an auto that would make 9 conference slots and either some conference would get left out or the playoffs would have to expand. I'm thinking it's going to be the latter, especially considering that the NEC is moving toward scholarship football and could become eligible in the foreseeable future.

And I agree with Sly on who we should be targetting. I would absolutely love to get NC A&T in here.
