First of all, I'll never be one to insult Nick Saban's intelligence, I think he is one of the smartest coaches in NCAA. However, I am quickly losing respect for him.
It is quite apparent that he has finally realized that running pro formation, with a pocket style QB, 99% of the time is dying. He's getting beat by teams like Texas A&M and Auburn. Other teams like FSU and Ohio State are on the verge of becoming powerhouses again (I could argue that FSU is already at that level). Meanwhile, Saban is realizing that no matter how many times he signs a #1 recruiting class, he's always going to struggle with a guy like Gus Malzahn.
More seasoned coaches are being pushed out of these national powerhouses because younger coaches come along with new systems. Look at how great Pete Carrol was at USC. He was great until a guy named Chip Kelley went to Oregon and introduced a completely different style of offense to the Pac 12. Look at Mack Brown at Texas, he was great until Art Briles came along at Baylor. Nick Saban has been experiencing success that may put him at the top of best Head Coaches ever in college football, but this year Gus Malzahn came back to Auburn and led the Tigers to possibly the best turnaround season in history.
Now here is why I'm am losing all respect for Nick Saban. As smart as he is, instead of trying to out-coach Malzahn and figuring out how to beat this offense, he's trying to make it illegal for Malzahn to run the offense. And possibly the worst part about it is that he's using "player safety" as his reasoning. In addition, Saban hates the hurry up offense so much that he's attempting to manipulate the rules committee. Bama just added UL Monroe to their 2015 schedule. Of course, that will be a huge payout to ULM. UL Monroe's HC, Todd Berry just so happens to be on the rules committee. Am I supposed to believe that adding ULM to their schedule is just a coincidence? What do you guys think of this? Is Saban really acting in concern for "player safety?"
