I was watching this video on youtube recently:

[youtube]

and I looked over the comments and a couple people (who probably dont know much about the rules of basketball Im guessing) claimed that there was a ten second violation (one said 8) on the play. Was there a violation or is it just more youtube comment sour grapes on a pretty sweet play?

Its not a 10 second call. If you wanted to be picky you could call a double dribble on the kid hiking the ball, but it would be a stretch. You would be perfectly within your right to call a T as there is a rule about the integrity of the game that was put in when you had people barking like dogs, running into the hall etc.
The bottom line is that it is only 2 points and there is a lot of basketball left to be played. And the other team is clueless on defense!

Can't really tell in the still frame because the video quality is poor, but a kid from the home team just grabbed the ball off the tipoff on this screen frame. Note the time is six seconds.

As you can see here easily, the home team has the ball in their hands, the kid in the bottom right corner just about the stupidvideos.com text. The time is 17 seconds.

17-6 = 11 seconds. That's a 10-second violation.

Do you honestly think any official is going to start their 10 second count as soon as it touches a players hands? Plus you could also be looking at 10.2 seconds and most officials don't count in tents of a second. Plus you are dealing with a human not an electronic count so, again, this is well within an acceptable margin of error.
You probably want 3 second calls when kids shoot and miss continually in the lane

Acceptable margin of error I do not disagree, but it is still technically a 10-second violation. And no, three second call restarts on shots, but I don't watch women's basketball so I don't get the displeasure to watch such sequences with frequency.

I try not to watch the most overrated league in history.
The ACC championship game had oodles of missed lay ups
And only two of them resulted in another immediate missed layup which is essentially the sequence originally described. In women's hoops that's like a perfect game.

have you ever watched basketball before? on what planet does a ref immediately start counting down after a tip off?

Possession starts off the tip off when a team controls the ball. That's what the first screen shot is.
You can have possession without having control. Once you understand that you will begin to see that calling a 10 sec violation here is ridiculous.
Officials are generally liberal in their interpretation of that when it comes to any 10 second count. Further, you have to consider the the mechanics of a toss. The official has to toos, back away, establish who is going where and put their whistle in their mouth. At that point the will maybe start the 10 count.
