Did they not? They gave that city something to look forward to. MNF came to NO (and unfortunately had to beat the Falcons  ) but people were actually happy and excited. They weren't focused on the disaster that had occurred.
that has nothing to do with a football team.... if there was a huge natural disaster in chicago, peopel aren't getting through it because the bears are a superbowl contender (hypothetical), if my home is blown away its going to take alot more than a football team beating another bad football team for me to be like "HOORAY EVERYTHIGNS AWESOME" if its football thats the only thing that will "revive" me, i'd be like "who in the hell cares? my house is gone but i'm supposed to be glad for a boo williams td? get out of here"

the people of new orleans themselves "revived" themselves along with the church, volunteers and others.

i just have a problem with the saints being the reason people got through such a natural disaster....its stupid.

Sly don't get me wrong. I understand what that city went through. i was down there in 06 and 07 and even a year after you could tell what kind of devestation that city went through. my problem comes when people use the victory to give credit to the saints for reviving the city. personally if i was a NO native i'd take offense to that. the team may have gone out and helped and volunteered during that time but it was the PEOPLE of New orleans who revived that city. It was the thousands upon thousands volunteers from around the country. all the saints did was do their job and represent a city well by playing the game they are paid to play. don't over sensationalize football. it still is JUST a game.

as for the game, i enjoyed it. good clean football. 2 phenominal td runs back to back. (PT's was a pass but the RAC was awesome)

i'm not sure what anyone else was expecting to happen....was it the minimal lead swings? oh well...it was good football.

The city's identity is essentially tied to three things:
  • 1. Oil & Gas
    2. Tourism
    3. Saints
Nearly everyone in the city is connected to one of the three if not all. The first two have taken a beating for the most part since Katrina/Rita. The third is a source of regional pride that can help distract from the other woes.

Yes, some of the statements about the victory have been over-the-top. And how is that different from other media efforts following every other sports championships? If the Colts would have won we would have been overrun by how Peyton is the greatest athlete to ever step football on any football field in history. Hyperbole is how the sports media maintain job security.

i would have complained about the manning hype too although this one stings a little more. my falcons have yet to win a super bowl and the saints now leave us as the only team in our division without a title. stupid elway. i have to admit though the game itself was great. i loved the overall clean play. not many penalties and the level of play seemed to be on par if not better than the rest of the playoffs.

Sly Fox wrote:I just don't get so many people calling the game boring. Sure the 1st quarter was slow but the rest of the game was competitive and that rarely happens in Super Bowls. Until Porter's pick six this one was going down to who had the ball last.
Two years for now, are you really going to remember that much about it? That's my test.

Great games have very memorable moments and finishes like Rams vs. Titans where the Titan player got tackled and his outstretched arm was barely short of the goal line. Patriots over Rams with the Vinatieri FG at the end of the game. Giants over Patriots where Eli Manning and David Tyree delivered one of the greatest plays in super bowl history. I don't really see any plays that standout like that and the finish wasn't overly great.

He picked off one of the greatest QB's in the biggest game of the year to win the game. That's pretty dramatic.

I think it was pretty anticlimactic. A bad throw to the wrong team puts the game out of reach. Now if the Colts would have kept the ball, driving to tie the game with about 2 minutes to go, that's dramatic.

but you aren't thinking about it in a "reviving the city" kind of way.

Count me into the boring category. I think it's because I didn't care who won. Normally there's a hero or a villain. This time it was 2 teams that I don't care strongly about.

Eli Manning's player > Porter's INT
Vinatieri's FG > Porter's INT
Rams Tackle at the end of the game > Porter's INT
Montana to Taylor > Porter's INT
Jon Riggins long TD run on 4th and 1 in super bowl VXII > Porter's INT
Jon Elway's diving run on 3rd-and-6 in super bowl XXXII > Porter's INT
Warner to Bruce for a 73 yard game-winning TD in XXXIV > Porter's INT
Desmond Howard's 99-yard kick off return in XXXI > Porter's INT

It was a nice play, but not one that will go down as one of the greatest plays - it was a terrible read and pass by Manning because it went right to Porter, and the coverage after the pick was basically non-existent. Most secondary players would have intercepted that pass and returned it for a TD.

OK Shuck, please enlighten us as to who said that Porter's interception was one of the greatest plays in Super Bowl history because I sure didn't read it. The closest anyone came was to say it was "pretty dramatic".

lol's Shuck did useless research or lol's shuck knew all of that to begin with. You really need to get a hobby shuck, and I only say that out of concern that you spend most of your time posting on a message board that IS NOT your schools or a school that you support...and when your not posting your doing research for your posts...walk up stairs, open up the blinds and see what daylight looks like buddy!!!

My most active forums are Non-LU Sports (42.57% according to my profile on here), The Lynchburg Life, and The Courtyard. Those three forums are potentially relevant to any human being that has any interest in Lynchburg, VA, sports, or any other random topic, not just LU folks.

Oh, and if you Google "Greatest Super Bowl Plays", you'll find the research that I could have used for that post took less than one minute, which accounts for less than .001% of the day lol. Besides, I knew all six of those 7 plays to begin with as I watched 6 of them and they are unforgettable - the Jon Riggins one I couldn't because I wasn't born yet, but I saw it on a TV show this morning so it was fresh in my mind. So I didn't need to do research to begin with.

It's not a dramatic play in my book if it's not an "unforgettable" play. Two years from now, most non-Saints won't even remember the play, that's not particularly dramatic in my book.
