Did anyone notice that VMI seems to be hanging somewhat tough against some pretty good competition...they had a 10 point loss to JMU the week before us, and then a 10 point loss to Richmond, I believe.

I'm glad we play the Keydets at home this year.

Actually, JMU beat them 44-16. They did hang in there 38-28 with Richmond. I watched parts of that game, and was impressed with the Keydet's offense, which not only put up the 28 points, but saved their defense from further embarassment by posessing the ball. The Spiders ran, passed and scored at will against VMI's defense.

Thats been their issue for a while...I mean they can and will score in bunches, the problem is they cant seem to stop anyone (remember what happened the last time they came to Williams Stadium?)

noticed, and also enjoyed this:
the eternally and possibly overly optimistic VMI fanbase, in this case- LEO wrote: Some other observations after sleeping on it all:

1. Brian Barnson has the speed and skill to get behind and outrun anyone, including the National Champions. And he did.

2. Byron Allen is a headhunter at FS in the Robert Mason tradition. Pound-for-pound, he might be the hardest hitter on the team and leads by action. This defense has moxie!

3. Special props are due Michael Johnson for that laid-out-fly-like pick of Ward. One of the most athletic plays in our secondary, maybe ever.

4. Man, those kicking-game concerns went up in a flash, didn't they?

5. Congrats again to our MVP yesterday, Kyle Hughes. Not only is he smart and fast, he can throw the ball and is also a bull of a north/south runner. Simply is no room for him on the pine.

6. This Saturday will be a break out game for both Tim and Howard, especially now that GW knows it has to defend the pass.

Poppy, you're right--this was an incredible atmosphere and we made that away game ours. It was the purest proof of the bonds I've seen. I much regret not meeting you and the others there--it was quite tight and loud.

We have to drop UR for the good of the program, though. They won't play us home-and-home (we need six home games every year) and they don't appreciate the gate we bring them there. They'll offer us only 1,000 tickets from now on, making a venue like yesterday's impossible anyway.

Let's just get the Richmond Chapter to claim the W&M event as its own from now on. At least we'll have plenty of room to visit!

I was surprised to learn they had actually lost the game. One might not have known.

I'll say this much for them, they never stop believing over there. Commendable.

They can move the ball on ya. It's the kind of offense they run, the wishbone, we ran in high school. But, that's about ALL they can do.

VMI has some nice players on defense and they are getting better each year. Damiso Alexander was one of the better defensive ends I played against all year last year and he is back for two more years I think. They have some linebackers that can really fly to the football, it has been their secondary that has hurt them in the past if I remember correctly. They will continue to get better and it will be a good rivalry between VMI and the Flames before long.

They put another scare into G-W but still came up short. They appear dangerous but still not quite there yet.
