CHARLESTON, SC – Charleston Southern women’s basketball coach Stephanie Yelton announced on Friday that she is resigning her post as head coach to become associate head coach at Ohio University.
Yelton will become the top assistant to Ohio’s newly named head coach, Sylvia Crawley, a teammate of Yelton’s on the University of North Carolina’s 1994 national championship team.
"We are certainly sad to see Stephanie leave our program but we are grateful for the five years of service that she gave to this program," said Charleston Southern athletic director Hank Small. "Stephanie has a bright coaching future ahead of her and we wish her all the best."
Yelton recently completed her fifth season as the head coach at CSU. The 2005-06 season was the toughest of her tenure as the Lady Bucs finished with a 7-21 record, 1-13 in Big South Conference play. Yelton’s five-year record was 56-84 overall and 28-43 in Big South play.
"I’m grateful for the opportunity that I had to be the head coach at Charleston Southern," said Yelton. "I leave this program with many fond memories and want nothing but the best for Lady Bucs basketball. I also look forward to my new position at Ohio working with my close friend, Sylvia Crawley."
Small said a national search for Yelton’s replacement will begin immediately with hopes of having a new coach in place before the end of spring. CSU assistant Larry Leonard has been named interim head coach during the search.
