Second is absolutely outstanding
I don't know if we can truly appreciate the job Coach Castro has done in the first full year of the reinstated program!
We take 3 outta 4- FANTASTIC! Not to mention Harner wins Outstanding Wrestler (well deserved)
as an aside- had Smith been able to go at 157 we may well have taken all 4 matches. Oh well.

A narrow 25-23 victory by Duquesne proved to be the difference between first and second place as the Dukes’ victory over Liberty gave them the championship at the East Regional Duals, Sunday afternoon, at Middletown High School.
Duquesne finished the day with a perfect 4-0 record to claim the event’s title, with Liberty following closely behind in second place with a 3-1 mark. Gardner-Webb posted a 2-2 record to finish in third with Millersville (1-3) and Delaware State (0-4) rounding out the final two spots.
Liberty posted three victories on the day despite giving up six points in each match-up as the Flames had to forfeit at 157 pounds because Shaun Smith was physically unable to perform and Liberty was without its normal starter at 174 pounds.
With the three dual victories on the afternoon, the Flames raise their season-to-date dual record to 15-7 in their comeback tour as this is the first time that Liberty has fielded a wrestling team since 1994.
Tim Harner led the way for the Flames as the 141-pounder posted a perfect 4-0 record in the event and was named the Duals’ Outstanding Wrestler. Three of Harner’s wins were by fall and the other by major decision.
This marked the second time this year that Harner has taken home the honor as he was also named the Outstanding Wrestler at the Virginia State Intercollegiates.
Also aiding in Liberty’s second-place finish at the event was Chad Porter at 165 pounds who was also 4-0 on the afternoon with two wins by fall, one by major decision and another by decision. Heavyweight Patrick Walker followed with a perfect 4-0 mark with two wins by fall, one by major decision and the final by default.
Christian Smith was the only other undefeated Flame on the afternoon with a 3-0 record at 125 pounds, including a win by fall and decision.
The Flames opened the day with a 28-18 victory over Millersville. Harner and Walker both picked up wins by fall and Chris Daggett at 184 pounds aided in the victory with a 13-2 major decision win.
Liberty followed with a 31-20 victory over Gardner-Webb, marking the Flames’ sixth-straight dual win. Liberty picked up four of its six wins by fall and another by major decision.
In the Duals’ decisive match, Liberty opened up a sizeable lead with a decision and two wins by fall after four weight classes to lead 15-3. But, the Dukes claimed victory in four of the next five weight classes to seize a 25-19 lead going into the heavyweight match-up. Walker dominated the match-up but was unable to pin Joseph Dorsie, picking up just four points in the 10-1 major decision to allow Duquesne to squeak out the two-point victory.
The Flames secured second place by closing out the day with a 30-19 victory over host Delaware State, highlighted by Harner’s win over Kyle Kinkenborg by fall just 51 seconds into the match and Porter’s victory over Derrick Loper by pin (2:14).
The Flames return to action on Feb. 15 when they host in-state opponent VMI at the Vines Center. Match time is set for 7 p.m. in Liberty’s final home event of the year.
