Smithfield LB drawing suitors

Don't sleep on Smithfield multi-sport star Rodrick Bowser, a 6-foot-2 point guard who recently was selected to participate in the Junior National basketball tournament in Columbus, Ohio, from July 21-27.

Last season, he averaged 12.3 points, six assists and five rebounds for the Packers. Those numbers have Chowan interested, along with a few other schools, but Bowser doubles as a middle linebacker on the football team. He led the Packers with 58 solo tackles last season. That's got Virginia Tech, Old Dominion, Liberty, James Madison, Hampton and Norfolk State inquiring about the rising senior.

Which will he concentrate on?

"Football," Bowser said matter-of-factly. "I think I have a better shot in football because of my size."

Since he's 6-2, 220 pounds, we agree, Rod.
