Rutgers fires Ash after 8 wins in 3-plus seasons

Rutgers has fired coach Chris Ash after the Scarlet Knights' 1-3 start, the school announced Sunday.

"We appreciate Chris' dedicated efforts on behalf of our football program, our department and our university," athletic director Pat Hobbs said in a statement.

Sources told FootballScoop in recent days that Schiano left his post back in New England in order to make himself available to return to Rutgers as the Scarlet Knights’ head coach. Sources said Rutgers made it clear to Schiano at the time he will be the choice to replace Chris Ash once the position became available.

That would be a rare occurrence if Schiano actually stepped in and took over mid season. They can't get much worse, and it might give the team a boost in confidence to have the man who was at the helm the last time Rutgers wasn't awful.

I don’t know them firing a bad coach mid season is a good thing. I’d rather play them under the bad coach when everyone is dejected than possibly rallied under an interim.

You are right, but the B1G wanted to get into the NYC market, and Rutgers wanted the $$$. They both were hoping that Rutgers could step up their game with the exposure and prestige the conference gave them. Didn't happen. Probably never will, although their chances are a bit better if they can hire Schiano.

Rutgers is in New Jersey, although it is fairly close to NYC. Neither state is a football hotbed, but there is enough HS talent to have a P5 program if you can keep a decent % of the top prospects at home. Rutgers has not been doing that.

But nobody in New York remotely even cares about Rutgers, the fact that they were brought into their conference for the "New York media market" is pretty laughable. They are New Jersey through and through.

Since he is "available" I that they don't go ahead and hire Schiano now. The only thing I can figure is maybe he decided he isn't comfortable finishing the season with Ash's lame duck staff, which I can sort of understand. Obviously, there is no way he could bring in his own people til the season is over.

Not a ton new here, but it is that time of year. UT is likely to go 1-3 in October at best, and maybe 0-4 (UGA, MSU, Bama, and USC). Assuming we start running off more wins, HCHF is going to get a lot of calls.

Now the starting QB is sitting out their next game and deciding whether to redshirt.

Can't say I blame him, and I wonder how many other players will follow his lead. Our chances of getting a win in this one are looking better and better.

One would think that between the University President and his scholarly minions and the highly paid AD and his staff of athletic administration professionals, it might have occurred to SOMEONE that if we just wait another week to fire the HC, our best players will not be able to redshirt this year. Of course it's possible it did, and they were actually thinking of the player's best interests and decided to do it when they did to give them that option. Yeah, right.

Excuse my cynicism in the post above. After further consideration, it really is hard to imagine the people at Rutgers were not aware of this. That would not necessarily mean the decision to make the coaching move when they did was totally altruistic. If they had waited a week, and then it could be proven that the decision had been made earlier, it would have opened an ENORMOUS can of worms.
